This place is great! I had the Lamb & Havarti and it was delicious! They slow roast the lamb in house and it's sooooo good! The staff is super friendly. They gave me a side of deli meat for my k-9 companion that was accompanying me. I'm always a fan of a dog loving business. I will definitely be coming here again.

I love Kawika's! It was a bit confusing to find the deli, as it's hiding between some shops & doesn't have much signage outside, but once we found it we were set! We came at the perfect time because there was no line and we were able to snag a table inside (Note: seating is VERY limited, so be prepared to get your order to-go). The man working the register was very nice and extremely helpful and was filling us in on the specials and was chatting with us about the weather and news while we waited. I ordered a Gyro with lamb meat and my boyfriend had some veggie sandwich and we both left very happy. The tzatziki sauce was sooooo good and all the flavors of the gyro blended so well together. My boyfriend whipped through his sandwich so fast I was surprised when I looked up and he was done, so obviously he enjoyed it! I would highly recommend this spot. Wide beer selection, sodas/teas/waters, etc. And a large menu that could satisfy anyone. Plus it's nice that it's away from tourist-heavy SF, so it's nice to enjoy a quiet, more local spot to sit and enjoy a meal.

BEWARE of the Lamb Gyro! They throw the Lamb and the Gyro wrap in the microwave.. It literally tasted like an unseasoned rubber tire. Also, the workers don't use gloves when they are preparing your sandwiches (it was gross when the guy wiped his nose while adding on toppings). There was no friendly hello/goodbye or even "how was your food?" Lastly, I paid 25 cents for two cups of water. The guy told me I had to fill up the cups with sink water (where everyone was washing their hands because the bathroom wasn't working.) All in all, this place is a disgrace to Mediterranean food and very unsanitary.

I come here every time I visit SF (which is often) and love it here! They have free wifi, are a great place to do some quick work, have live music, fun events, and above all, the food is amazing. The bread is fresh baked in house and their rotisserie turkey is my absolute favorite! They also have these really great spiced jalapeños that I get a little container of every time I go! The service is great- the workers are always joking around and happy, which is a tribute to how organized and well run the place is. I know the owner and know how methodical he is with every aspect of his store, and it shows through all over. The man who opens in the morning on weekdays is also super sweet and cute! ;) The location of this place is also amazing! They're right by ocean beach, so it's super easy to go in, grab a sandwich (and a drink if you're feeling saucy ;) they have a wonderful wine and beer selection ) and head out to the sun and salty breeze. This is one of my go-to places, and I love making a visit here a habit!

Great deli. Fantastic Rueben. Cheap/good booze. What really puts this place up over the top to 5 stars is the customer service. The owners operate the place with a lot of pride and take an interest in their customers. They're smart and engage in conversation that targets the individual's interest. The events they hold at the location are also a great service the community. Oh, and the food is excellent too.

Omg, I am such a fan of this deli! I feel like I stumbled on a gold mine! House made salads, bread, fresh roasted meats daily, wine, beer, decent pricing, and all walking distance to ocean beach. And probably the creme de la creme of it all, free street parking nearby. I was looking for an easy lunch option after a beautiful hike and this place popped up with gluten free options. My partner in crime for the day was willing and the idea of nibbling beach side sounded great with the sun shining as it was in mid-February. We ordered our sammies and waited with the throngs of others for their sandwiches. We were quoted about 20 minutes, but I think it was ready faster than that. The deli makes house-made gluten free bread that is thick, rich, and delicious. It has sunflower seeds in it and is so hearty it is almost like a pumpernickel bread. I opted for a dry Italian salami sandwich with swiss, avocado, and veggies. You can get quite clever with mustard, there are like many options to choose from such as Mendocino sweet, Sriracha infused, dijon, etc. I opted to live wildly and choose the sriracha, the flavor was good but WAY too hot for me and the irony is I couldn't eat my GF bread because my mouth was on fire after 1/4 of the sandwich with that mustard spread lovingly on both sides of the bread. The owner Joanne also has celiac and informed us over a free glass of sparkling wine that the kitchen is as dedicated as it can possibly be for a GF kitchen. The GF bread is made in its own machine, has its own tools, and the staff are trained to avoid cross contamination as much as possible. She informed us that the baker who delivers treats also provides GF options at her request. I tried the cherry pie and it was delicious! Light, flaky crust, not too sweet. Even 2 days later it was still fresh. This place was such a win for me on what was already a pretty awesome day. This is a go to if heading to Ocean Beach!

One of the best sandwich I ever tasted. Ocean Beach Deli used to be called Freddie's (owned by a different owner). Everything is still the same except for the name. Ocean Beach Deli bakes their own sour dough bread. Sooo good! They offer other bread options but I would recommend getting the sour dough. You pretty much get to choose what you want on your sandwich (Turkey or roast beef, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, cheese, lettuce, mayo, and mustard). You can order beer and wine (also full bottle). It's a great place to get a great sandwich and enjoy it on the beach!

Dog friendly - 5 stars Gluten-Free options - 5 stars Food - 4 stars Hubby and I schlepped all the way out here because Yelpers rated it high with outdoor seating. After looking at the photos, we thought it was probably dog friendly and gave it a chance. We paired it with a hike at China Beach and called it an afternoon jaunt with our dogs. This place was so dog friendly that they brought some ham shavings to our poodles while we waited for our food. Say whaaaaaaaaaat? The girls gobbled down the treat - butcher paper and all. The guys working here were beyond friendly. They brought our food out to us on the sidewalk then check up on us. My gyro was really good but there wasn't as much meat as other other gyro places give. Maybe I should have ordered a sandwich. Super easy parking.

Used to go to this deli all the time when it was Freddy's, and always loved the sandwiches. Tried it with the new ownership twice now and am very disappointed in the lack of attention to details. BOTH times the sandwiches were either missing ingredients or had ones that we hadn't ordered. This most recent time they neglected to add the avocado that they charged $2.50 for. I'd already taken the sandwich home by the time I figured this out, and now I feel ripped off. The sourdough rolls are great, but the Dutch crunch ones are stale. How about you guys figure out how to make sandwiches correctly instead of continuously spamming your neighbors on Nextdoor? Oh, and it's VERY expensive. $25 for two sandwiches and 1 Coke. TJ Cafe next door is a much better deal, lunch for two there is under $20.

Kawika's Deli is a cute deli along La Playa right next to the beach. The location couldn't be better, because not only do you have the beach right there, there's also Sutro Heights Park, which is a short climb up the hill and offers a gorgeous view of the Sunset. It's a super friendly deli with lots of good sandwich options. i got the special of the day -- leg of lamb with tzatziki sauce. They offer freshly baked bread of various kinds -- I recommend the fresh sourdough roll or dutch crunch. The sandwich was delicious and I definitely want to come back and try their others. The baklava and tiramisu also looked great.

A cool local spot. Kawika's sandwiches are good but not on the level of something ridiculous like Giordanos Bros. I'm saying this to clarify that the stars KOBD gets are for the whole package (rather than the food alone) - which is - a cool local/neighborhood/friendly shop. Doesnt hurt that they're right on the beach and is perfect for a post surf snack. Service has been great every time i've stopped by (almost - seems like the espresso machine is a challenge for some staff; and the concept of a togo bag for leftovers also needs to be explained).

I've been going to the Safeway down the block from this shop for almost a year and I never knew Kawika's existed. My loss! For the $$, their 1/3 lb sub was a monster value. Their pre-set sandwiches all looked good, but I went with the Turkey club on the Dutch crunch...good call, add the honey habanero mustard too! The food was great, the service quick and friendly. Maybe I shouldn't post this review and keep this place a secret for myself!

  • Majid D.

Nice food, I had roast beef with Dutch bread and it tasted good enough. UPDATE: I visited this place the second time and honestly didn't like it like the first time. I got Dutch break home specialty sandwich. The bread was not fresh. The worst part was that I asked for cup of water and the cashier told me I have to pay for that water because of water shortage in California! I respect the issue of water shortage in California but this has nothing to do with. Having cup of water I believe is a normal thing for any cafe. Also the sandwich wasn't as good as I thought. There are so many other cafes in the Bay Area and outer and inner Richmond with much much better yummier sandwiches.

If you're in the mood for spending a tranquil day at the beach and wish to enjoy some of the best sandwiches near the ocean, look no further because "Kawika's Ocean Beach Deli" just might be the spot for you. Surprisingly, this place has been dishing out killer sandwiches, gyros, piroshkis, and much more near Kelly's Cove since 1985. And coincidentally, that was the year I moved out of San Francisco! Conveniently located in the Outer Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco, "Kawika's" is literally 1/4 mile away from Ocean Beach. For those of you locals that know where this is, much of this part of the city of blanketed with a thick layer of fog nearly every day. But that didn't stop me from checking this place out. Parking can be a bit of a challenge as there are limited spots located directly on La Playa St. However, you're almost guaranteed to get a parking spot if you park at the nearby Safeway which is only about a 2 block walk. I come here with my lovely fiancée, Claudia in mid-October in Saturday to get away from all the madness that is taking place in other parts of the city. And this just so happened to be the same weekend as "Fleet Week" as well as the San Francisco Giants making their playoff run to the World Series. But enough about that, let's focus on what this review is intended for and that's finding out if "Kawika's" is just as good as the Yelp reviews say! When entering the restaurant, you definitely feel like you're dining on the ocean. Sea blue walls gracefully flowed throughout the interior. Additionally, there was a large refrigerated area serving a complete assortment of sodas, beer, and wine. And of course the snack area is plentiful with various chips, pretzels, and crackers. But what really grabbed my attention was the deli case which proudly displayed meats, cheeses, salads, and desserts with a mix of American, Italian, and Greek. As I was wowed by the sandwich selection, I asked one of the employees what is their most popular choice and he proudly mentioned the daily "House Specialty Sandwich" (for $9.95). This consisted of their fresh roast beef & turkey on their signature sourdough bread baked daily. My fiancée decided on their "Pesto Salad" as her main entree. I have to say, the sandwich selection offered here is so extensive, it was difficult in narrowing down what I wanted. Within just a few minutes, both of our meals are brought out to us. I indulged in the first bite of my sandwich and was truly impressed with the flavorings offered here. The meat packed a subtle salty taste while the melted cheese worked perfectly in the crunchy yet flavorful sourdough bread. I also tried a few bites of my fiancées pesto salad and was impressed with the creaminess as well as the natural basil flavorings that makes the pesto a winner in my book. I definitely would recommend "Kawika's" to anyone that is looking for a wonderful meal and exemplary customer service. The staff here was helpful and attentive while the overall ambiance made this a nice hidden gem in my book. And since San Francisco offers some of the highest quality food in the country, this place definitely ranks high in my book. To the owner and staff at "Kawika's", keep up the good work as I'll be coming here again!

Ahh Ocean Beach Deli, you truly are one of the last of your kind and are a jewel to behold when it comes to filling a hungry man's 8 pack , no, 6 pack, well, definitely 4 pack stomach! Growing up, aritisan Deli's abounded in the Outer Richmond of San Francisco. There were so many "Mom & Pop" sandwich places as well as small chain supermarkets that had their own hand-carved meats and freshly baked breads for local "sarnie" lovers. As a kid I would score yummy sandwiches at "Little Woman", "Ralph's Meats", "Petrinis", "Cala", etc. So, when I moved to SoCal and asked for a "Dutch Crunch" roll, the food counter people looked at me like I was from another planet! I mean, I tried explaining it to the 17 year old dude at Panaera Bread but he just looked at me and suggested Ciabatta. WRONG! Alas, the god's of the yelp search engine blessed me when I looked for my beloved Dutch Crunch during my work week in SF. Try Safeway by the Beach? Bleh. Been there, done that, soooo not-the-same! Grant you, their Dutch Crunch be inexpensive. I mean, you can buy a whole freaking bag of it for around $5 but, sadly, not all breads are created equally. Then I saw Ocean Beach Deli. I used to go there years ago after surfing when it was "Freddy's", heard they changed hands, and was more than willing to try it again! Found their menu online (yes, it's 2014, and any respectable business now should so have a website) and ordered a combo "Roast Beef, Turkey, & Jack" and also a "Corned Beef, Pastrami, & Swiss" to go, on, of course, Dutch Crunch rolls. The gentleman who answered was totally friendly, helpful, patient, and even offered yummy salad suggestions! 15 minute later, I drive up, navigate street parking around the senior citizens home above the Deli, walk in, and was totally happy to see my order was already in a bag, ready to GO! YAY! I'm not gonna say Ocean Beach Deli's were the best I've ever tasted, I'm a gonna say they are the most F A N T A S T I C! Tons of meat, greens, and perfectly seasoned! The bread was perfectly crunchy, light, and chewy.I haz me a yum, yum, yum, that reminds me of the sandwiches of my childhood. This is now my "go to" sandwich place in SF, so much so that several of my SoCal friends have asked me to bring them some they can see what all the fuss is about. Are you ready Ocean Beach Deli?!

Mm. We wanted to grab some sandwiches to take with us to enjoy at Baker beach. There was no line when we came on a Monday early afternoon. The workers were pretty helpful! My friend and I were able to split just one sandwich that lasted us a good couple of hours. The macaroni salad is charged by weight, but I wouldn't recommend getting it. Definitely get the dutch crunch bread! Will for sure stop by here again anytime I head over to the beach!

Great little spot near Ocean Beach. And it is little. The seating area is very limited, but the menu is extensive. You can get an array of sandwiches and sides, coffee, and alcohol. They also hold events from time to time. I went to see a ukulele band, and there was also a girl who knew how to hula dance. So she performed a few dances as well. When I entered the deli, a lady who worked there greeted me with a big smile and explained their happy hour options, and what was available. Unfortunately, they didn't have soup. She explained that they don't get a lot of orders for soup, so they don't stock up on it often. I ended up getting a spinach piroshki. I've never had a piroshki before, so I can't comment too much on it other than it was good. I wish I was hungry for a sandwich, but that just means I'll have to come back, and I definitely will. And I need to reiterate that the employees are very welcoming and friendly. Check out their website for more information about their events.

Had a terrific salmon and avocado sandwich here today on their homemade sourdough bread. I'm not a big fan of sourdough, but he assured me it was a mild sourdough, so I gave it a try. The sandwich was delicious and it was big enough that I had half for lunch and the other half for dinner. It was a perfect "to go" meal for a picnic at the nearby Land End Trail. I'd definitely choose this place next time I'm looking for a quick meal in the area. They said the salmon was wild Atlantic, and it did taste quite good. I didn't ask if the rest of the ingredients were organic, but since they didn't advertise it, I assume it wasn't. If they served up local organic veggies, I'd up them to a 5.

EXCELLENT gluten free bread! Had a sandwich on gluten free bread and it tasted just as delicious as homemade regular bread. Owner was very nice and gave me the recipe for the bread so I can make it at home. My brother in law had the lamb gyro and said it was delicious as well and the tzatziki is out of this world! Two thumbs up!

I'm so happy that I stumbled upon Kawika's while wandering through SF! Not to mention, it made my day to meet a fellow Punahou alum! CHEE! \m/ The ingredients were so fresh and delicious!!! I ordered a salmon and avocado sandwich on dutch crunch. It was huge and so flavorful! I usually don't finish a whole sandwich on my own, but I definitely did and my tummy was super happy :) My boyfriend ordered a turkey and pastrami sandwich on dutch crunch and he was a fan! He usually doesn't like sandwiches, but he loved the flavor, especially the habanero honey mustard (he liked it so much he bought a bottle). Everyone was super friendly, helpful, and attentive. My only complaint is that I don't live closer to Kawika's!!! Otherwise I'd be here ALL THE TIME! Thanks David for the awesome experience! I will definitely come back the next time I'm in the area!

Though Fredy's has changed to Kawika's, I'm happy to report that the quality and friendliness has remained the same. The new owner, David/Kawika, embodies the gracious and welcoming spirit of the islands of his birthplace. My smoked turkey and bacon with white American cheese on a toasted sourdough roll was absolutely delicious. The sourdough roll was nice and soft on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside, giving the perfect amount of crunch without tearing up the roof of your mouth. The ingredients were also super fresh. They still serve beer, wine and cigarettes here. In addition, they also now have live music here every week. The DBF and I will definitely be back again soon for another killer sandwich!

  • Mark S.

Wow, what a sandwich! I had the salmon and avocado on their sourdough. The salmon was perfectly cooked and spiced and the lettuce, tomato and avocado were fresh and cold. The bread was SF sourdough at its finest. Hard (but not too hard) crust yet soft inside. Little hole in the wall just off the beaten path and oh so worth the stop! Then enjoy the view from Ocean Beach while you munch.

Only lived in outer Richmond for a week and have hit up this place 3 times. I have tried the piroshkis ($3.75), the gyro ($7.75), and a hot bacon/chicken on their fresh sourdough. Everything has been very reasonably priced, out quickly, and a lot of food for the money. My favorite was the lamb gyro. Fluffy and hot pita, tender and moist lamb, and a tzatziki sauce that was not overpowering. I'm sure I'll be back for more! I haven't hit up any of their events or wine happy hour, but I'm sure it's great. The service has always been friendly

Kawika's is my jam! I will definitely be coming back to this place for not just the food but the wonderful friendly people who own it. My friend and I are also planning on doing improv night here so you should come! We ended up here bc I wanted to catch the sunset by ocean beach and read a book but Karl decided to fog up the day and hide the sun away. No matter, Kawikas saved the day because there was a jazz band performing, gyros to be had, roasted turkey sandwiches, delicious drinks ... Ah the works. Love love how it's just a block away from the beach too :)

We tried Kawika's OBD on our recent vacation based on the Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. Plenty of sandwich choices or build-your-own. A handful of standard deli type salads are available (pasta, potato, etc), and other sides, too. We enjoyed a salami and turnkey combo and their house-rotisseried roast beef. Both had plenty of meat and fresh toppings. It's a hole in the wall, unassuming kind of spot in a great location just one block from the beach. Friendly staff and fresh food at reasonable prices. Good to know: *Very close to the beach, Cliff House, Seal Rocks and Sutro attractions and Land's End. *Street parking only but not hard to find. *They accept cash, cards and digital currencies. *Veggie and gluten free options on the menu!

Tasty and generously-assembled sandwiches, a nice selection, and courteous staff. Prices are fair, and the whole process is efficient, and parking is usually easy unless its a beautiful day at the beach. Use the yelp check-in and save a $. I will return for sure.

This place was awesome. I'm really sad I didn't find it sooner. The sandwiches are delicious and the owners/staff are sooo very nice and welcoming. The woman (who I assume is an owner?) came out and poured us free glasses of wine to sample while we were waiting for our food - she was such nice lady. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're hungry in the Outer Richmond.

  • Judah D.

Friendly. Delicious. Fairly priced. Accommodating to my obnoxious niece and nephew. All sandwiches are the same size so getting smaller sandwiches for kids isn't an option. My opinion is that all sandwich shops should have a small piece of paper with the bread, meats and all other ingredients and the customer just circles what they want. It's more efficient and eliminates any potential confusion. Also the sandwich maker doesn't have to sit there waiting for people to make up their mind. The store would definitely benefit from it since it gets very busy. 5 stars regardless. That's just a suggestion for all sandwich shops.

Great place! They carry a wide variety of sandwiches, desserts, and local beverages. I had the pulled pork sandwich - it was delicious (and spicy!). Wife had a gyro that was flavorful. And we saved $2 courtesy of the Yelp check-in! A great experience in a less congested part of San Francisco.

Love this place! 5 Stars for customer service - everyone is genuinely friendly and kind here. 5 stars for food - Their sandwiches are ah-mazing! What a great find! Stumbled in here after a long morning at Ocean Beach running and writing. The primary reason I chose this spot was because they had an outlet to use near a table inside and I needed to get some work done. Dave was very friendly and suggested I try their special which was the lamb. Superb meats and eats just minutes away from GG park and Ocean Beach. Thanks so much, Dave and friends! :)

This place is a hidden gem of ocean beach. They have such a huge selection of meats it's overwhelming at first! My personal favorites are the fresh roasted rotisserie turkey, the salmon avocado, and the leg of lamb with melted havarti! Everything here is so good I have a hard time deciding what I want to eat! They make it easy for you with their daily specials like the meatball sandwich or the pulled pork. And to top it all off they have great service and some awesome community events, I always try to make it down for their live music. Did I mention they also have wine and beer? Why are you still deciding. Go to Kawika's already!

Best sandwiches! Get the bagel dogs for the kids. Hidden spot in a quiet area. Great for when you go the presidio or the academy. They have a fridge of drinks too and looks kinda like a liquor store. Ceiling fans and eclectic music make for a nice lunch area. Smoke parking on the street. Will come again when go to the legion of honor.

I think that sandwich was life-changing. I had the lamb special on sourdough. Probably the best sourdough I've ever had, and the lamb was tender and delicious with havarti cheese. Service was exemplary- the owner brought us our sandwiches and explained how they prepared the meat. Great place!

Ocean Beach Deli deserves more than 3 stars. sammies and the deli probably the star here. drinks pricey. eats: pesto mushroom calzone (3.5) -mostly bread with little mushroom present. pesto not tasted. -terrible value. though it looked big. mostly hot air. service fab. -skip the calzone and everything will be fab here. -nice selection of brews available.

I'm sorry but I am the least pickiest eater and this place pissed me off. I came here a few weeks ago after a hike and was looking forward to devouring a yummy sandwich that I read about on yelp. There were no orders before mine... The guy that took my order was either extremely high or just out of it because I gave him my card and he was staring into space for literally a minute. I didn't say anything.. Just looked at him. Then he shook out of it and said "sorry I spaced out". I'm super chill and know it's like to be a kid so I said no worries! I bought two of the specialty sandwiches for like $20. It took 20 freaking minutes for it to come out. The sandwich was suppose to be toasty and warm but it came out cold. You could tell it's been sitting out for awhile because you can see the cheese was melted at one point and returned to room temperature. If I wasn't hungry from the hike, and the sandwich came out when it should've.. Then I would maybe give this place 3 stars. There was nothing special to the sandwiches. Me and my friends thought it was meh. Maybe I came on an off day but I don't understand why this place has such high ratings.

I have actually dreamed of the salmon avocado sandwich here! The owners are menches, the food and service are fabulous. Fab. U. Lous. The location is crazily obscure, appropriate, quirky and somehow convenient. The bread and meats are yum yum. Oh. All this and live music too? Kawikas, you have my heart! Well, and my belly.

Got the special on Thursday. Yeah you guessed it, pastrami. Dutch crunch, added Dijon and jalapeño. Unfortunately the jalapeño was picked but yes. It was good. Great service, friendly staff. Placed an order online was ready in 15 minutes, double park, literally walk in and out- winning.

Amazing sandwiches in a great location! I love going to Kawika's. They have amazingly delicious sandwiches, fresh roasted turkey, daily specials like lamb and bbq pork, etc. The dutch crunch bread and the sourdough (that they bake daily) are delicious! The insanity habanero mayo is so good too! The beer is cheap, the owners are friendly, they have cool events like comedy nights and live bands, and they are right next to ocean beach! I love grabbing a sandwich and a beer and walking down to the beach to enjoy it. A true gem of the Richmond!

Complements to the sandwiches. I thoroughly enjoyed the special they had went I visited the deli: chicken and bacon with melted pepperjack. I would definitely come here again to try more of their menu and see how everything else fares. The only downside I encountered was the slightly elevated priced and the hard sourdough bread that scratched the inside my mouth has I engulfed the daily special. I would recommend getting the Dutch crunch bread instead. I do like the owner and he does seem to enjoy working behind the encounter and knows almost everyone that walks through the door. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience.

It's unfortunate but I will not be going back and if there isn't significant operational and personal changes, I foresee others feeling the same way over time. What happened recently was ridiculous and potentially happened because either the people who work here are either stoned or extremely incompetent. After going in many times and being satisfied, I went in recently with my girlfriend and ordered the sandwich I always order. The hot Turkey and Roast Beef. This sandwich used to be stellar. On my last visit, it took FOUR times. Yes, FOUR TIMES (all wrong) to be remade then I finally asked for a refund, which was given. I appreciate that but this experience was awful. Yes, four different times my sandwich was made incorrectly. Five if you include my girlfriend who received the wrong sandwich. Were they busy? Slightly, but not incredibly busy. Busy as any sandwich shop should be on a weekend. Was there a line out the door? No. If they knew what they were doing there shouldn't be a problem. This is what makes me think they're stoned behind there! (waited 20 minutes before getting first attempt) First Fail - Got my Sandwich without any meat. I go to give back to kid behind counter. He laughs and smiles. No apology just a sarcastic laugh. (This guy is a real smart ass) (waited another 10 minutesDon't you think they would put a rush and focus on mine since I already have been waiting so long) Second Fail - Got a sandwich was gunna take a bite. Wasn't the one I ordered. So I take back for a second time. Give back to same kid behind counter who just says "Oh, okay." So I go sit down and wait after being told by and one of the older guys there its coming right up. (waited another 5/8 min, girlfriend is done with her sandwich done by now. ) Third Fail - Sandwich finally comes out, I take to go back to table. The sandwich looks like it feel on the floor. It's cold and looks nothing like previous sandwiches I've ordered here. I again take back this time speaking with the owner. He explains to me that new minimum wage increases make it so they don't automatically toast this particular sub. Also mentions that usually they ask if it's needed to be hot or cold. I've got this sub like 10 times and never have been asked that. I suggest a sign stating customer needs to state whether they want it to be hot or cold is needed. Doesn't really respond, okay so I guess it's my fault. Customer isn't always right I guess, at least not here. (waited another 5-10 minutes for the fourth attempt) Fourth Fail - Sandwich FINALLY is ready. I'm hungry and people waiting are all aware of how many times this has happened. It's almost like they were just as happy as I was to finally get my sandwich correctly made after 45 minutes! I sit down and check it, WRONG AGAIN! Seriously, how in the hell does this happen after three times. I finally took my sandwich to the owner and asked for my money back which was given. With the team of stoners to his left, within talking distance it shocked me he didn't quickly see what the problem was with his team. That showed me he didn't really care about finding what the issue was. He was a bit too calm, if I were him I'd want to find the source of the problem no matter how busy I was or at least to show the customer I cared about their issue. But no. After my first time going and dealing with him and his whole reluctance to give me hot sauce on the side (he insisted I have it put on the sandwich, rudely) then this, I wont go back and will stop telling people I know to go there. There is a great much cheaper and better spot on Clement and 25th. Go there, they're nice and I'm pretty sure their workers are stoned and incompetent.

Damn, it's real nice to be able to find a place that's super friendly AND has awesome value AND just be one of those places around the corner that you can always count on. My homie just so happens to live within walking distance of this place. Coming from a guy who has clutch food within walking distance of where I live, these things matter. Sandwiches are well worth their price and then some, especially considering it's the City that we're talking about. We were able to call our order in, so we didn't even have to wait to get our food. They legitimately stuff the sandwich with a lot of meat and the Dutch Crunch is good bread too! I was also told that there was a fairly recent ownership change. Well, the new owners were really nice and appreciated our patronage. And they also take AMEX? Yeah, I think I'll be coming here more than once.

Where else can you get a glass of champagne and a great deli sandwich (or better yet, a gyro with homemade lamb sausage) a block from the beach? Ended up here after a day in Golden Gate Park, and definitely found a favorite! Comfortable place with great food and homey atmosphere.

Great people, great location. Incredible selection of reasonably priced wines--you can drink on site. Homemade everything--including gluten free bread--Roasted lamb is out of this world and great choices of sandwiches and sides. Love it!

Changing ways. Giuseppe Ottaviani's changes: youtube.com/watch?v=XXix… Fredy's changes: tablehopper.com/chatterb… No change: Homemade sourdough bread. Enormous sandwiches with 1/3 pound of fresh rotisserie turkey worth the $10. Service so accommodating the hummus add was free. Twice a staff member came by to ask if everything was good. Absolutely. What also hasn't changed: Five stars.

I had the salmon avocado and my husband had the angus roast beef about 10 bucks each. Bread was hard... Sandwiches were alright but def not better than their neighbors TJ's!!!

Busy deli, a few veggie sandwich options. The staff hustle and good service. Some outdoor seating.

  • Mike M.

This place SUX! An hour and a half wait for a veggie sub! The man making the sandwiches is a psycho micromanager and oversees every sandwich personally while 5 other employees casually chit-chat in the back. Why people are so enamored with this pathetic excuse for a sandwich is beyond me. Take it. It's all yours.

Came in over the Memorial Day weekend with friends that frequent this deli often. It was a sunny day and we were looking forward to getting a tasty bite to eat. We had a pretty large order everyone in our party really enjoyed their selections. They serve and sell wine to partake while you are there or to purchase for later... How awesome is THAT???!! the bread was delicious everyone raved about the sourdough, I ordered a gyro with my daughter fiance but I did have a bite of Thomas Jefferson sandwich which was ordered with some pretty hot sauce, let's just say I was lucky to get one dang bite! Hummus was authentic with creamy deliciousness! Overall we will be returning on our next trip to Ocean Beach. Respectfully Reviewed

Nice small restaurant with top ingredients, fresh baked bread. Free wifi and friendly service. My dad was delighted about this choice of a place. If you want to grab a bite and you are nearby this is the place to go!

Nice neighborhood deli with an European feel. (I think the owner speaks fluent Greek) So far I've only tried their gyro and it's pretty legit. Will update the review as I try more food from here. Note, they only make chowders on colder days. I went on a sunny day and couldn't get it. Will try again next time.

Great sandwich shop! We found Kawika's Ocean Beach Deli on a random beach day. It was easy to find although we had to pay close attention to see the signage. I think I got the number 1 which is roast beef, turkey and jack cheese. I also asked for avocados but they were missing. Lame. Regardless, the sandwich was really good! The size of the sandwich was pretty big as well. The service was good, they were really nice and quick. We grabbed a some wine and were good to go for a picnic on the beach! I'd return for another sandwich here.

Having bad bread at a sandwich is a problem.. For the sake of your customers tastebuds please change the bread .. Also the pastrami tasted like hot dog Minus well make your own sand which and save $10

Pastrami!! Delicious, the leanest pastrami I have ever had and full of flavor. And the Dijon mustard gives it a nice little kick. Fast, friendly service and a definite face lift from the days of Freddy's. They have added music and community events - just check their page. Glad to support a local business. This is my check-in since I still have a Flintstone Flip Phone, LOL

Nice cozy place perfect for an afternoon snack after hanging out at Ocean beach. I wanted the lamb gyro but they had just ran out of lamb! Stinks! But to rescue came the owner that was standing near the register. She suggested getting the lamb rotisserie that they make in the store. Mmmmmm what a great suggestion! It tasted great' If you come to get the lamb gyro and they are out then substitute for the lamb rotisserie :) enjoy!

Whoa, this deli is legit. At lunch time on a weekend, it is packed with people trying to get a bite. The sandwiches are seriously delicious here. They have an array of deli meats and some preset combos, but you can of course make your own. On top of that, they also have a lot of side dishes to choose from, which they will happily microwave for you if you choose to eat there. I was really impressed by my sandwich. It was a good old-fashioned sandwich, which is always good to have amid the selection from all the new-style places with their fancy combos and secret sauces.

The sandwiches are great. Sooo good! I'm not usually a sourdough guy, but the sourdough here is so fresh and so good I can't resist. The turkey is also fresh roasted.

My second favorite sandwich place, behind Estella's. Took awhile to get food but there were only 2 people working and we were behind two tech workers whining about Bitcoin. The sandwiches are amazing, the piroshkis are better. The cheese cake was incredible as well. Kinda pricey, but it's expected since it's right next to the beach.

We visited the sutro baths and I wanted a lunch place close by. Based on reviews & proximity I decided to check it out. While we waited outside, the man came out with freshly sliced meats for my dog! That was so nice! My dog loved it! We got our sandwiches (very big) and had a picnic at the beach. The sandwiches were delicious. All 4 of us enjoyed our lunch. The baklava was pretty good too!

Great neighborhood deli and mini market. Craft beer at awesome prices. Food is quite delictable. Plus the staff and atmosphere could not be more warm and inviting. Home away from home. I live close by and it feels like an extention of my own living room. Also, for smokers...they sell cigs and cig accessories! All around, better than safeway...

I really didn't know what to expect from this cute, small deli. We came here just yesterday before heading out to enjoy the beach. The two of us spent quite a while looking at the menu (so much to choose from hehe). In that time, all of the staff greeted us and asked if they could help us out; we refused, but they were oh so kind. I guess we were taking a long time, so this kind lady came up to us (I didn't catch her name, but she was so helpful and terribly sweet) and talked us through the menu. We ended up both ordering pastrami sandwiches on the fresh sourdough (the choice of which already got the stamp of approval from the kind lady--which was pretty darn awesome). Again, the staff were all really kind and genuine...and awesome. The only thing we noticed was that there seemed to be horseradish in our sandwiches. We're not complaining, but it was an interesting surprise since we didn't really order it with it on (and weren't expecting it to be in there, but we rolled with it just fine). It was a nice kick to our taste buds. Great sandwiches (I'm not a deli sandwich person much, so for me to say that is pretty goooood). So good. I wasn't even that hungry for my next meal (oops). Can't wait to try the other offerings on their menu next time! (: *EDIT* Not horseradish! It was the Dijon (as confirmed by the owner). Learning and tasting new flavors everyday!!

This family-owned spot pairs delicious food with friendly, generous service. The sourdough bread perfectly crunchy and their homemade hummus is made with just the right amount of garlic. The baklava was sweet and flaky, and paired well with their special house coffee! Plus, for all of you Yelpers out there, if you check-in, you get a dollar off your sandwich! I'm definitely coming back!

Fresh roasted turkey? Fresh roasted roast beef? Fresh baked sourdough? GET OUT! These are some seriously tasty sandwiches. I'm actually not that into sourdough but gave it a try today and it was so super fresh and tasty I think I'm gonna stick with it here from now on. Been here a few times now since it ceased being Fredy's and was reborn as Kawika's and it's been consistently yummy. Staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful. Great selection of drinks, not just your typical soda selection but specialty sodas, juices, beer and wine. Large selection of salads, sides, and desserts that look great but I've not tried because the sandwiches are so dang big I can't fit anything else in mah belleh!

I made an account just for these sandwiches, because they were delicious and the owner was awesome. Sandwich: the sourdough was soft on the inside and had just the right amount of crunch on the exterior. The turkey was moist and quite clearly fresh-shaved; it tasted like turkey without overwhelming the sandwich. I watched them slice the avocado in front of me, and it was fresh and delicious. 100% excellent. Owner: so, Dave might be the coolest Sandwich Dude ever. I talked to him for ten minutes just about Star Trek, and he's recruited me into Starfleet. They have a TV for football and a bunch of comfortable chairs to kick it. You'll feel welcome and comfortable while you eat tasty sandwiches. Highly recommended.

It was a hot day so everyone was getting a sandwich on their way to the beach and it was too late to pick another place. I was getting super HANGRY that it was taking so long (West Portal's sandwich place handle the crowds AND even toasts the bread!) but I have to say... it was worth the wait. Very flavorful, very fresh, I'd definitely go back (maybe on a cloudy day in hopes of a shorter line)! We got their roast turkey and pastrami. Excellent, excellent!

I have Celiac and always need to eat gluten free. This place is on point. They have two dedicated ovens for gluten free bread, a special toaster, and GF labels on everything. It's great to see someone take it seriously. Highly recommended for anyone with a gluten sensitivity.

Great sandwiches and friendly service! The meats had great flavor and there were many gluten free options. I will return again next time I am in the neighborhood.

Awesome little deli right by ocean beach I got the roast beef and turkey sandwich. It was only $10. Their sourdough is fresh super soft with a crunchy shell. The owner was friendly and we actually had a great conversation. They have a daily special and it's different every day. If you happen to be in the area, I definitely recommend dropping by for a sandwich. The place is super clean and they have a 100 on their health report rating. I will definitely come back. This is probably one of my favorite sandwich shops.

UPDATE (8/31/14): The owner David, immediate replied back to my review. He apologized for the how the sandwich turned out and asked for any feedback on how to improve my experience next time. It's honestly great to see owners reach out to dissatisfied customers to try and improve their business. Just for that, I will probably try this place again when I'm in the area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The staff was very friendly throughout the whole time while giving, paying and receiving my order. The location is a very close walk to ocean beach and the interior was very welcoming and unique. So why the 3 stars...it's for the nearly 30 minute wait just to get my order and the mediocre sandwich. Despite the friendliness of the staff and the welcoming ambiance, a 30 minute wait for a sandwich is unacceptable especially if the sandwich wasn't that amazing. I had the tuna melt on sourdough and it wasn't terrible, but let's just say I've definitely had way better sandwiches elsewhere. If they got more employees making sandwiches, then I might come drop by sometime. Great people running this place though!

    (3)
  • Sally L.

The sandwiches were amazing! Their sourdough bread is fresh to order and the meat they use are utmost best. I was greeted with the nicest people that own the place and they really helped me out with their menu since it was my first time there. They are friendly and the atmosphere provide a chill place to eat your food. I would totally come back. Thank you staff at Kawiki's! :)

I was with a couple friends at the beach and we were starving so we were searching Yelp and came across this place. It's kind of hidden from the beach, but it's easy to find. The staff was friendly and the owner would come by and check up on us. I had the honey baked ham sandwich on sourdough and it was delicious. For a little dessert I had the tiramisu and a brownie. Both were good! The only two downsides are seating and wait time. If you're in a rush, I wouldn't recommend coming here, but if you have time, definitely stop by. They also have outdoor seating and a lot of events each week. If I'm ever near the beach again and I'm hungry, I'll come back!

We like this place for lunch. When the restaurant changed ownership a few months ago all the good stuff from the previous owner was kept and some new benefits came along for the ride. Particularly enjoy the pulled pork sammich special on Wednesdays. I'm never in this part of town for dinner but it seems they have some good options then, as well, along with live entertainment on some nights. I'm not sure how that all fits into this space but I bet it's a fun time!

I don't think I've ever come across a deli that I've deemed my favorite, but I'm confident that Freddy's place is it. It's the most unpretentious, no-frills, quality place, a real neighborhood staple. I knew we made the right choice when people were double-parking outside to come in and place their orders, and locals were shuffling in (some in their pajamas) to get "the usual". We tried two sandwiches, the #2 (corned beef, pastrami, and swiss) and the #5 (mortadella, salami, and provolone), both on their outstanding Dutch Crunch rolls. Half of one sandwich was more than filling for me, and we ended up saving the mortadella sandwich for a snack later on. Everything was reasonably priced, outstandingly fresh, the owners are super friendly, and they have some awesome chips and beers to pair your meals with. Highly recommend, and will definitely come back for a quality sandwich! UPDATED: 5/21 to reflect this was for Freddy's, no clue how the new place is.

  • Melisandra R.

Delicious food, friendly atmosphere and decent prices. Their side salads didn't look very appetizing and they didn't have soup because it was a 70 degree day so I just had chips. Their sandwiches are so big you don't really need the sides but it'd be nice to have better side options.

I'm new to the area and found myself looking for a quick lunch. I'm thrilled to have found Ocean Beach Deli. The options are plenty, the ingredients are all extremely fresh, and my sandwich was delicious. I had the pleasure of meeting David the owner. He and his staff are very friendly and this is the kind of place you look forward to coming back to. While I was there I grabbed a newsletter and discovered they do music and comedy in the evenings. I think I'll be hanging out here a lot!

Every sandwich we've had so far is fantastic. Definitely get the sourdough bread. Kids like honey baked ham and cheese. They roast many of their own meats. When you're at Ocean Beach or heading to GG Park--it's a great spot to pick up a sandwich for a picnic!

Wolf in sheep's clothing. Culinary food disguised as a regulah old deli. Much much better than expected. I walked in perusing while I am not eating wheat or dairy. After I almost walked out, the owner pointed out their homemade gluten free bread. So, I had a toasted turkey salami sandwich with the works. It was the best sandwiches I've had from a deli in SF. Also, he makes his own homemade gravlax and hummus, which I will definitely be back to try.

the place was cool, not the greatest ambiance, but the people were friendly and made some pretty good food. They gave us some free wine tastings and we bought a pretty decent bottle. They charged us for 2 glasses at 8 bucks each and then next time sold us a bottle for 15!? (SCAM) U TELL ME LOL But i wasn't really mad, because the place overall was cool, they gave my dog free deli meat which was a plus. Id give em a shot

Love this deli. Always have fresh meat and tasty items in the cold case. Very friendly and willing to make whatever you want. They are dog friendly as well and always give my dog a handful of fresh turkey as a treat. Good prices too!

  • Sam S.

I would rank this deli right alongside the best sandwiches you can get in SF, right up there with Ike's. The sourdough bread is made in-house I hear, and is the perfect foil to whatever classic, high-quality filling you chose - turkey, bacon, pastrami, roast beef, lamb, or veggies. Kawika's doesn't seem to have the "creativity" of Davey Jones Deli or of Ike's (Ike's having their dirty sauce, unique sandwich names, and components like vegan breaded chicken); Kawika's focuses on making just the best, straight-ahead, high-quality sandwich they can make, and there is nothing wrong with that! Prices are fair, with their beer prices running slightly higher than average. The proximity to the ocean, Land's End, the park, and Golden Gate bridge make this this ideal spot for grabbing something to go to eat while hiking, biking, or just enjoying the day out. I look forward to going back here.

Great deli. They have a lot of options, including healthy ones with diet restrictions, i.e. gluten free. Their smoked turkey is really really good which is what a normally get. They have some seating inside, do local music on Fridays evenings, and is close to the beach. They're all exceptional with their customer service. Especially the owner (I think that was her) and the pink haired girl who makes the sandwiches. She never puts together a sloppy sandwich, is generous on the fillings, and never rushes her patrons. All in all a deli that knows how to run a business. As reflective of their many 5 stars across the board.

I finally made my way to this place one morning (thanks to all them road blocks with sf fixing them roads). Decided to buy my crew breakfast sandwiches. We were all impressed and it was delicious! You can really tell that it was made with love. The guys working here enjoy and love their work and it shows it what they produce. So thank you Kawika. I will definitely recommend you to family, friends and co workers. Keep loving what your doing! Kudos!

This review is specifically for the guy at the counter who goes by the name David. Absolutely THE WORST customer service I have ever experienced. He was so rude and aggressive when taking our order. Seemed like he had zero patience. I wanted to like this place... And actually their sandwiches would have probably tasted better if the customer service wasn't so bad. First he told us that we couldn't tie my 4lbs dog to the outdoor table for fear that she was going to drag the table down the block to the beach. Not only is this totally uncharacteristic of something my dog would do... But also, that's just physically impossible. Second, when taking all of our orders, he was extremely rude and kept looking at us as if he didn't have the time of day to wait for us to choose what kind of cheese and bread options we wanted. I would have been more understanding if there was a long line.... But we were the only people waiting. My friends and I won't be returning here ever again.

What a great sandwich shop we happened to try one night. We were very warmly welcomed by the owners, they introduced themselves and explained their menu to us since it was our first time there. They also told us to check in with yelp to get $1 off our sandwich which was awesome! We both got their in house roasted turkey sandwich on the BEST sourdough roll I've ever had. We will definitely be back not only for the food but the friendliest owners and employees.

My husband and kids enjoy the sandwiches. Unfortunately, during a recent visit, my husband came without a bag to carry several items home. Unfortunately, my husband didn't have any extra money with him. The owner refused to give my husband a FREE bag! Unbelievable that the owner couldn't demonstrate business skills and give a plastic bag to a devoted customer. Well, repeat customer, he is NO MORE!

I've been eating at Kawika's three times over the course of the last month, dropping by when I can get a chance to. I live down in San Jose, so let me say right now that the sandwiches are worth the drive north. The deli is run by incredibly friendly staff behind the counter. The deli's owners often converse with the patrons, man the register, and make you feel like you're welcome. I've been mixing it up with the sandwich selections, and after trying their chicken, roast beef, and roast turkey... I'm going with the roast turkey on a sweet roll as my favorite. I'm told that they roast their own beef and turkey every morning! It certainly comes out in the flavor! Add to the fact that you can get a sandwich to go and take it over to the beach with you for an awesome lunch with a view! I love Kawika's and I know that if you give them a chance to dazzle you, they won't disappoint!

Best sandwiches in SF! I came here on Fred's last day and have come back multiple times since then. The new owners are super friendly and really love what they're doing. They have a "daily special" sandwich. Always get that. It's never disappointing. The sandwiches are huge and aren't filled with a bunch of fluff lettuce etc etc either. Always get the sandwich on their sourdough bread. Sooo crunchy and delicious. Excellent selection of potato chips and sodas. (This is very important for a sandwich shop). I'll always come back here if I'm craving a sandwich.

New owners have spruced this place up. It looks great. Same good sandwiches (a little on the pricey side), and good service. Only wish they had better sides. The potato salad wasn't stellar.

This has become my go-to hang out in SF. Food is always excellent, the menu has some great additions over the past few months, LOVE the selection of really good wine by the glass (at very fair prices!), and the owners and staff are always fantastic. I also really enjoy the variety of entertainment regularly offered - I have attended several wine tastings, latin jazz band, Hawaiian music group, 3 book readings and a comedy night! Always easy parking within a block. Love the beach-theme of the place too. Real neighborhood gem.

I have been looking for a solid sandwich stop since moving to my new hood (Outer Richmond). So stoked on finding this place! I recommend trying the in house roasted turkey, it is killer. Hopefully the new ownership can keep up the good vibes and tasty food.

I attended Kathy Stershik's talk on Big Data last week. It was the first of the Thursday night events that I have attended and it was great. The talk was not only interesting (and scary) but it was well thought out and beautifully presented. It is such a nice atmosphere at Kawika's to hang out and learn something new. And let's not forget the fabulous GYRO! Yum yum - thanks George!

this is a prime example of what i love about the outer sunset. there is no hipster vibe. there is no hype. but tucked inside a little strip of stores by the beach, there is a beautiful artisanal sandwich - *fresh-out-of-the-oven* roast beef on *fresh-out-of-the-oven* sourdough, heaped with fixings. take your slammin' sandwich and a drink to the beach for a world-class lunch.

It's a weekly requirement to hit Freddie's deli. My boyfriend and i are there either saturday or sunday every week to get an awesomely tasty and filling sandwich with a side of baklava. HE has fresh fresh sourdough rolls, delicious specials including pulled pork, reubens, gyros, and an awesome selection of high quality deli meets. His hot sauce is excellent and he has fresh jalepenos on hand. His baklava is so delicious, and you can tell that everything made by Freddy is made with love. HE also has a nice selection of beverages, and gives my doggie little scraps of meat everytime we go there. Freddy and the woman that work in there are super nice and laid back, sooooo friendly with the customers. They are of the few people in this city which have a natural knack for customer service; they are genuinely good people. Overall, Freddie's Deli is definitely the best sandwich shop in the city.

After a day of cleaning up Ocean Beach for Earth Day our team of 12 headed over to Fredy's for lunch. They took our orders and delivered the sandwiches at super sonic speed. The fresh sourdough bread was hot and delicious. What a great place!

pastrami sandwich left me very satisfied. Awesome location, less than a block away from the beach. When the weather in SF stops being shitty, I'll definitely bring my friend by and have lunch at the beach.

Freddy's has the best sandwiches in SF! the price is right, the ingredients are always fresh, and the people that work there are charming. I got out of my way to make it down to the beach to grab a sandwich. I highly recomend Freddy's.

after a stroll or jog at the beach, or before i head out to enjoy the rays, i often stop by fredy's to get a breakfast or regular sandwich. it's a great alternative to safeway's deli counter.

Grab a sandwich, chips and beer and walk up the sutro steps for a picnic with the best view in all of SF. The owner of Freddy's has been consistently cool and friendly over the years. You can tell he really enjoys his business and customers.

The Best Pulled Pork I've Ever Had!!!! I am a huge sandwich fan and since the business changed hands from Freddy's to Kawika's the quality and cleanliness has been night and day. Their sourdough bread came fresh and HOT right out of the oven :) and the hand pulled pork was TENDER and JUICY! Can't wait for my next visit. They say they have great PEPPER TURKEY!!!

best BLT ever!!! Yum all the sandwiches are good and so is the baklava. BOMB.COM owner is so nice too! When it is crowded the sandwiches can take a while to be made but it is so worth it.

Fredy's Ocean Beach Deli Fredy's not failed me yet! Fredy's not failed me ever!! Fredy's Deli on Ocean Beach is the Bomb!! Fredy makes all his sandwiches with real meat. Fredy always gives me excellent service. Fredy's is a small local place to be hanging out at. Fredy's is down by Ocean Beach. Fredy's is a block away from Safeway. I always get his Roast Beef Sandwiches there most of the time. yelp.com/biz_photos/4BDY… I've gotten the Pastrami also. No failure yet. Build it the way you want it. Get it hot or cold. It always taste good. All his meats are always fresh. The bread he uses are awesome. The Sourdough Roll is what I recommend for the Roast Beef Sandwich....it's got a nice little crunch to it....it can be heated / toasted and it still taste good. You've got different cheese to chose from. You got a wide variety of chips to choose from. Drinks are an original...not fountain.. How can I fault Fredy? I love his sandwiches, I'll be back for more!! 5 Stars all the way around!! Note: It may be a little hard to park in the area, but his sandwiches always hit the spot for me. Well worth it. Take Muni if you dread the parking. Lots of things to see and do in the area.

Great place for a gyro and coffee. I really enjoyed stopping in after walking the beach. The owner was really helpful and actually has a drawer of charger cables for different phones, so I was able to get my phone charged while I ate. It was the perfect place to stop in.

Bad reviews?? This place is always on hit! Order: Yes, sometimes I've had to wait 10-15mins but you can take a short stroll down the beach before you stuff your face or have a drink. Food: The hotdogs taste like NYC dogs. (My kids love them and if you been at NYC, you'll know what I mean) Turkey sandwhich is my favorite. They are very generous with the meat and veggies. Staff: very friendly and the owner always has a smile even if he's stressed out. Not once have I seen him jump on his staff to rush the orders, which is very rare these days.

  • Ruobin W.

Great sandwiches. Their bread is delicious and fresh. The filling can sometimes be meh. I prefer their roast meats. The pulled pork I got as a daily special wasn't all that spectacular. I think perhaps the sauce was tastier than the actual rest of the sandwich. Gotta love their check-in offer for $1 off! Good price, too, for SF anyway.

Well I'm disappointed. Its been a few months since Fredy has retired. The new owners seem to have a problem or 5. 1. Running out of bread at lunchtime. 2. Orders are incorrect. While waiting for quite too long, I notice several people that have placed orders complaining of missing sandwiches. I expect that new staff as well as new owners would make mistakes in what goes on a sandwich but to completely miss items. Erm, bad news. 3. Two people standing around instead of helping. The guy working the register has no idea how to write orders down nor how to make a sandwich. If you're one of the owners two helpful suggestions, inspire confidence in your patrons and talk to them, and know how to make the food. For the lady trying to get me to change my order, this is wrong on so many levels. If I had wanted something else I'd have ordered it, additionally offering me a plastic cup of white wine does no good. It screams incompetence. If your busy at lunch EVERYONE should be working. 4. Don't lie to the patrons. If you tell someone it will take ten minutes for something don't evade and ignore when they try to follow up. I waited 27 minutes as opposed to the ten as promised. Time is important. I don't like to waste mine. 5. Food did not taste the same, close but not quite. I won't be back anytime soon or if at all. This sucks because Fredy's was my go to place.

Their fresh-baked sourdough is superb. If you have to wait for it fresh from the oven, it's worth it. Quality meats, friendly owners, all in all a great local sandwich spot.

  • Paul B.

Love to find a spot with a local feel. Owners David and Joanne ended up chatting with us outside on a gorgeous day for the better part of an hour. Committed to doing right by the local community and creating an inviting environment for neighbors. Joanne is personally invested in their gluten free menu since that what she can eat.

    (5)
  • Kristin V.

TOTALLY stoked that this place exists! Their lamb gyros are to die for, they have the most amazing edamame and goat cheese salad, their home made gluten free bread is to die for, they serve beer and wine, and the staff and owners are incredibly friendly. Whether you want to take something out to the beach, or just kick back and eat in, this is the best deli around. I'm editing this review because I just came from yet another an incredibly fun evening at Kawika's. Lately they've been featuring FREE live entertainment, and tonight was something they call Sunday Funnies. (Check out their online schedule for this and other events). As somebody who often actually pays to see live comedy (and we all know what a crap-shoot that can be) I can say with honesty that both the host of evening and the comics he brought on were as funny as anyone I've seen. Admittedly, a deli is an unusual venue for a comedy show, but these guys totally made it work. Bravo! I'll be back!

These are some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Try the #6 on Dutch Crunch with bacon: turkey, salami, Swiss, and all the fixings. The staff is great! Courteous, friendly, and very efficient. You should definitely come here instead of the safeway deli for a nice ocean lunch.

Great place for gourmet sandwiches with a variety of side options! The deli selection was superb and wine is on the menu, which made for a great pairing. I had the meatball and roasted turkey sandwich on fresh baked sourdough bread, it was delicious! I really enjoyed the quality of fresh foods and the staff was very friendly! This place is a must try.

Great sourdough! Solid sammies, great beer and wine selection. They have a nice and very affordable rose I can't find anywhere else which I love. Also, the owner's wife is a really sweet woman; I watched her help an elderly customer prepare and eat his gyro. Literally brought tears to my eyes! What kind and generous people. Support this local business.

  • Sofia G.

I'm sure if you're looking for something fancier like pastrami, reuben, or any other roasted beef, this place is probably a good choice. If you're looking for a simple turkey on dutch crunch, go to Safeway down the street. Bad smell inside

  • Aaron T.

I stop here for lunch when im working in the area. The sandwiches are reliable and the prices are fair. Some of the smaller candy and snack items are a bit higher but you gotta make a profit somewhere. Really close to the beach so this place is good for grabbing some food quickly. The owner is really involved in the Yelp reviews and the dollar off is always a plus. Straight forward place with straight forward sandwiches.

    (5)
  • Chris L.

Peroshkis were sort of meh. Not hot enough and the bread had an old texture. Seems like they are heating them in a microwave instead of an oven? Yelp has tricked us again by showing reviews for the business that used to be here. Boo Yelp.

I think the service all around got even better with the change in ownership (they thanked me for my business again when we were leaving and said to come again) and the sandwiches are still awesome. When I miss my old delis in the east coast, I bike down here and it never disappoints. Also their swiss is lactose-free. Put it along with some corned beef and pastrami and hot sauce and you've got a sandwich that might be worth trekking out for plus a wide assortments of drinks. Five stars and pinned to my favorites list of San Francisco.

Kawika's is my favorite deli/neighborhood sandwich spot in the Richmond. They have fresh sourdough rolls and they make a really good Ruben. My favorites are the pulled pork, BBQ goodness with crunchy slaw (Wednesdays special) and the meatball sub (Fridays special). You can't go wrong with this place, and they serve beer and wine!

Clean and i mean CLEAN, which is important to me. If they keep their air filters and floors that clean, I trust the food that I'm eating here is safe. Overall great vibe and reasonably priced menu. There are a couple of tables inside and outside for you to enjoy your meal. New owners and they are super nice. They forgot to put my order in for my gyro but it was an accident during a busy time..could have happened to anyone. And one of the owners was nice enough to offer me a complimentary glass of wine for the mishap! Would definitely come back.

The deli has been there for years. Typical sandwich shop with a nice wine and beer selection. Great place to grab and go. A little expensive and they do use the microwave to melt the cheese. But ive never been given stale bread or wilted veggies. And are willing to make you a new sandwich if the order was wrong. Great location by the beach.

combine aloha spirit with the warm hospitality of the Greek Islands and add totally delicious food and you have Kawika's! First time I saw such a broad smile on my nephew's face was after finishing the turkey/roast beef sandwich! We'll be back for sure!

I looked at one of the bad reviews. Sure doesn't apply any more. I'm from Hawaii and heard about it from a friend of a friend. Really perfect place. Deli at the Beach. There is no way they could do a better job. I asked about a bottle of wine in the cooler and the waiter said "Pick it out and we'll pour you a glass." It was like that. Easy smooth. No edge. Felt like home. and, oh yea, food was good too,

We have been coming here for a long time and love the sandwiches. Everything is very fresh and you can decide on the type of bread and other things to add. We typically go for turkey sandwiches, but pulled pork sandwiches on Wednesdays are worth a try. Aside from the tasty sandwiches, I appreciate the owner of this shop being a kind and friendly person. Waited for my boyfriend to come out with our sandwiches at the door with our dog. The owner came out and offered her some turkey meat (which she gladly accepted). :)

I've been going to Freddy's Deli for years, been in OB Deli once and had a fine experience, but here I am my second time back trying to grab a beer and watch the Giants play in the World Series - but I forgot my bike lock. In most other local places this wouldn't be an issue (especially when there's only one other person in the place) and *especially* if Freddy were still running things. But they told me rules were rules and there was no way I could bring my bike inside. The fact that they wouldn't let a neighbor and customer come in to watch one inning of the game when it's SF in the World Series (and there was tons of room to set a bike for 10 minutes) is unacceptable. Thumbs down for OB Deli, they clearly are not real San Franciscans or true Giants fans.

Its been a while since I moved from the beach but when I was craving a sandwich yesterday, there was only one place I wanted to go! The service here can't be beat - so friendly and so nice - you can see that they care about what they are doing... and what they are doing is making one heck of a sandwich. Had the special - honey pepper turkey with cheddar on a fresh sourdough roll. Simply delicious. Take your sandwich, a bag of chips and soda and walk down to the beach and enjoy!

#3 on my SF sandwich list! Fredy's offers plenty of other goodies as well. Plus they have the booze! This is key. So great after a long hike around Ocean Beach and Land's End. I don't feel bad coming in here sweaty and wind whipped. Spacious interior with lots of seating. I've never encountered a wait longer than 5 minutes. I'll be back Fredy, don't you fret.

I walked in here on a whim. I didn't want to go home and wait for my chicken to defrost so I opted for a sandwich. I had seen the $1 off coupon on the Yelp page so I figured it'd be worth a shot. This place is kind of hidden amongst several shops/stores/clinics on La Playa and I had never seen it before. When I walked in, it was very clean, quiet, and smelled like pepper. There were people in line and it took about 10 minutes for me to tell someone my order. I could tell someone was on break because only one guy was taking orders and serving salads/making sandwiches. The menu has somewhere between 8-12 sandwiches. Typical chalk board menu with a Daily Special off to the side. I went for the #6 Turkey and Dry Pastrami on Dutch Crunch, no mustard. With the $1 off coupon, I paid $8.35 for just a sandwich. I got it to go so I ate this at home. Pros: -EXCELLENT salami, so good. -Fresh tomato, pickle, onion -Huge sandwich. Can easily be split by two people who are only looking for a lunch portion. Cons: -Dutch Crunch doesn't seem fresh. It's kind of crumbly and doesn't crunch like it should. Does not have any sort of bread consistency. -Turkey was a teensy bit bland. I was expecting a better taste. -Lettuce doesn't seem fresh. I assume it's iceberg. You guys should think about buying Romaine. Or maybe that's an option? I didn't ask. -Slightly overpriced. I would not pay the full $10 for this on a regular basis for a sandwich. I'm sure if you're looking for something fancier like pastrami, reuben, or any other roasted beef, this place is probably a good choice. If you're looking for a simple turkey on dutch crunch, go to Safeway down the street.

This place used to be my favorite. Now it seems to be under new management with all new employees too. I waited almost an hour for a turkey sandwich. They were clearly unprepared- they kept running out of bread and other ingredients making the wait ridiculous. I hope they figure out a system soon. Super sad to see this place go down hill.

Fredy's reminds me quite a bit of my hometown: rustic, southern-style convenience-store/deli with a Californian twist (hey, gyros!). There's a Lotto table for those interested in that kind of stuff, and a television playing the latest sports game. The best thing about Fredy's is, of course, the sandwiches. All hand-made, the selection is very generous with an average price of $5-$8 per sandwich. I wasn't sure about what came with the "combination" sandwiches (wasn't sure if the word "combination" meant that a drink and chips came with it or not), but my brother ordered one of those. I went with lamb gyros since I was surprised to see that on the menu. Delicious and messy; the bread was very soft and warm. My brother's sandwich looked quite tasty as well, albeit even messier than the lamb gyros. No worries on the messes though: they have napkins at every table. Service was very warm and friendly. Fredy prepared the sandwiches very quickly, so the wait was not very long at all. The deli has many drink cases and plentiful displays of sweet treats, including ice cream snacks, vegan cookies, and cakes. There's room to sit and enjoy the sandwich, or you have the choice of also taking the sandwich to go and eating it on Ocean Beach. I never even knew that Fredy's existed in that little strip of shops just a block up from Safeway; had I not stumbled upon the listing on Yelp, I wouldn't have ever known about it. I'll be back to try more of the sandwiches soon.

I've always wanted to try this place since it was nearby and had such rave reviews. I just finished running the Nike Women's Marathon and felt like I deserved a big fat treat. However, the traffic was ridiculous and I didn't want to move my car at the risk of losing my space. So I came here to grab a sandwich. Too bad it was disappointing! I ordered a turkey sandwich on dutch crunch and just watching them make it grossed me out. I was kinda hoping for one of those heaters they use to run the sandwich through to make it hot but they simply microwaved the meat and called it a hot sandwich:( My dutch crunch was the sorriest loaf of bread I've eaten. It was beyond stale and if you know sandwiches, the bread needs to be top notch as well as the quality of meats. bleh never coming back. My heart belongs to Lou's Sandwiches

Yay, Fredy's has re-opened! I have read many a glowing Yelp reviews and was so happy to give this place a try. All in all, it was a pretty good, substantial deli sandwich. Ordered the #1 cold (roast beef, turkey, swiss on sourdough), #2 warm (corned beef, pastrami, provolone on sourdough), and a soda. Total: $22. Note about the bread: dutch crunch is my jam, but had to try the daily-baked sourdough. A little tough on top, but really good flavor. Plenty of seating inside and a surprising drink selection (sodas, teas, beers, etc.). I think what sets this place apart is the friendly service. Fredy is a smiler, and not afraid to joke around with you while you're waiting for your tasty sammich. So glad to have you back, Fredy!

    (4)
  • Sara M.

Love this place! I got the sunday special - turkey and melted swiss. The sourdough bread was fantastic - has a very nice flavor and is a little crispy (which I love!) Only thing, I took my sandwich to go, and something in the sandwich made the bread a little soggy by the time I got home (less than 15 mins). So, I'd say eat in, or lay off the veg toppings. $1 off when you check-in on yelp!! :)

  • Nina L.

I cannot say enough great things about Fredy's. I had the pastrami on Dutch crunch bread, and literally closed my eyes so I could fully enjoy the first bite. Absolutely delicious. Combine that deliciousness with a place that's easy to get to, right near the ocean, and has some of the friendliest service I've experienced...and you've got a can't miss experience.

Best sourdough bread I think I've ever had. It's made in house and very fresh. The outside is crunchy and the inside is soft and warm. It's just... great. Sandwiches are bit on the pricey side, and depending on his day, Fredy can either be super sweet or aggressive (which I find funny, I've witnessed him snap at my boyfriend and his blunt personality is entertaining). Either way, Fredy and his sandwiches are great. If you're ever near Ocean Beach, I suggest you stop by and grab a sandwich!

Strolled up to Freddy's and saw a "change of ownership" sign on the window. Noooo!! But Freddy was still inside with the new owner.. He confirmed he sold the business. Last sandwich Freddy will ever make me. On my birthday...pretty good present if you ask me!

After taking a stroll along the beach, we wanted to stop by Fredy's for a sandwich. I stumbled upon Fredy's Deli on yelp and was blown away by the ratings! Holy smokes, 4.5 stars!? I gotta try this. Got the roast beef with cheddar cheese on dutch crunch. The meat was dry, the bread was stale, the only ingredient that was fresh were the tomatoes, wtf?! Ugh, so disappointed. This was my first time trying a gyro. The beef gyro was....saucy. It wasn't what I expected-not very flavorful. This place seems like a favorite for locals...I really don't know how this place received 4.5 stars.

I have been going to Fredy's Deli for a long time now. I must say his sandwiches have always been one of my favorites. The sourdough bread is the one to get for all his sandwiches since it is always so fresh and crunchy. All his deli meats and cheeses are very high quality and the price for the sandwiches is good too. I must highly recommend his Wednesday special, which is the pulled pork sandwich. This sandwich is absolutely delicious which comes with spicy pulled pork, coleslaw, bbq sauce, and onions. Besides the great sandwiches is of course the friendly service. I have had the pleasure of knowing Fredy for a lot of years, and he has been a good friend and manager all the way through. Hes funny and you'll enjoy the service provided by him and his employees.

This unassuming sandwich shop in BFE churns out some of the best deli sandwiches in recent memory. Fresh loaves of bread, hand carved deli meats, yelp coupon upon check in, what more could you love. The ambiance is a big fat zero, but take it across the street and freeze your butt off eating your amazing sandwich on Ocean beach. Love this place!

Great food. Fresh sourdough bread from in house and Fredy is always there! He's so nice and easy to chat with. I brought my dog once and every time since then he sends me home with meat scraps if my dog isn't with me. Just great service, its nice to be remembered! I always get the pastrami or the pastrami/fresh turkey combo. Both are so good! Also any daily special, especially the meatball sub. Love this deli, would eat here every day if I could afford to

The taste is definitely as good as it gets. The sandwiches are awesome. So good. And everything is sliced and prepared right in front of you. Oh man, I wish I could have one right now. Fresh everything. He also has a bunch of snacks and drinks to choose from if you're headed down to the beach.

I've only come in for Wednesdays Hot and Spicy BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. It's soooo good!!! I go out of my way on Wednesdays just to get this sandwich in and around my mouth.

The lamb gyro is the best I've had, when I got it, it seemed the lamb had been on that vertical spit they use to cook it for a long time because it was so cripsy on the outside, so good. The pita comes with gyros, red onion, tsatziki and I think lettuce (?) It was incredible in my opinion.

Great little deli, get your food and go to the beach if you dare risk the sand. In general though the hot sandwiches are great, the staff here is very chill and its really reasonably priced. Its a nice little secret of the Ocean Beach area. It ca be tough to decided what to have here, and be warned the specials are special for a reason. If you taste it you just changed your sandwich order. They also are really customize the order.

SF sandwich quest continues! The Fredy's Roast Chicken Sandwich 9 bucks. Juicy fresh roast chicken breast meat, was dripping juicy, great smoky flavor with a big fresh sourdough roll. The Fredy's does it everyday! The greatest lunch deli at ocean beach for many years. Btw, I am not a chicken person. I never order chicken fried rice. I never order chicken chowmein. I never order chicken teri-yaki. I never had chicken flavor-top-ramen. I never order chicken taco. I like chicken well cooked like DFC, deep fried chicken. I am not a chicken person. There is chicken-sashimi in Japan. I had to pass when the thing was right front of me. That's over my head. I understand so much about delicacy foods in different cultures, but sometimes it so cross to just a sickness habit, sometimes people behave bad without knowing what the fxxx are they eating. Because their mother eat and their grand mon eat? Gross me out. Raw fish is great but, not raw chicken. Even in Japan, I had to pass. I am not a chicken person. Actually, I am not a bird person, period. I don't like small animals basically. I can't see the difference between small animals and insects. I know the difference of their body structure but ... it's very scary looking. Eating bird is not really gives me appetite. I have been almost forced to eat turkey every Thanks Giving. Force-feeding, that's what I have been. No one at the dinner table never understand why I don't like turkey. They looked at me like a poor Japo never had a great turkey dinner. I was like a fool, I said, " I tried but I don't like it so I don't want it, so Thank you," They took it as an insult. I was in a trouble. I felt like all people in the dinner table wanted to kill me. I was like, Can I not liking turkey dinner? I found out, in hard way, that disliking turkey is a big insult in US. I didn't know how serious that was. ignorant, that is the word. I was an ignorant immigrant. Since then, I kept my mouth shut and took a couple small slice of turkey and try to smile and enjoy conversations. People asked me that, "Oh you are not so hungry?" at every single Thanks giving dinner table. I was so sick hearing it. No offense but I really want to say, " I HATE TURKEY YOU DUMB ASS!!!!! How can you eat this shit! Where is soy-souse? " But No, I didn't, I never say that. So I always say, " No, No, I am eating. This is great food. Thank you so much." But, most turkey I had were so dry, no flavor what so ever. I'd rather be alone and having a canned sardine in olive oil in stead. Thanks Giving dinner had been always like a secret nightmare for me. I am not a bird person. I'll be happy to have ham or beef at Thanks Giving dinner, I'll be so happy. I'll say Thanks from bottom of my heart. But the Fredy's Roast Chicken changed a bit of my bird fear, a bit. Fredy's Roast Chicken is a chicken that I'd love to have. And I'd say Thank you to Fredy's. The Street that Fredy's at, is a very strange Street. It calls La Playa. It seems dead Street. BK is the next door. Don't bother that, just go Fredy's and make your day for sure. I still think turkey is boring meat.

This place is over-priced, staffed by amateurs and has no business calling itself a deli. Bland as Nebraska. Only go here if Safeway is closed.

One of the best deli's in SF, which is saying a lot. Great food, great prices, great staff who are always nice and willing to have a conversation while they make your food. Freddy even knows us now and gives us meat scraps to take home to our pooch! Try the sourdough bread, which they make on site every day! You won't be disappointed!

  • Daniel Y.

I'm going to be frank, this place rocks. They have a great selection to choose from Dutch crunch is great sourdough is spectacular. The roast beef is fresh and tasteful. They don't use weird sauces which turns me off from other sandwich shops. This is definitely my go to for Giants games and days at home watching TV.

  • Sfgpgirl G.

More like 2.5 Stars. Seriously, a turkey/salami/cheese sandwich with a bag of chips comes to $11.26 (?!) and was OK. Yes, the cheese was melted, the bun warm and soft but other than that it's pretty run of the mill. I'll definately go back to try something else since I;m in the 'hood, but the sandwiches are not as good as Lou's Cafe on Geary.

  • J R.

This place kicks ass. On top of having awesome food, the service is great. They make many food items in-house, including the bread, the gyro meat, and the pulled pork (Wednesday only). The pulled pork sandwich from this place is probably one of the best I have ever had. The gyro meat is also one of the best I have ever had. If I had one complaint about their gyros, it is that they serve them on pita bread and the tatziki sauce is kind of bitter (I prefer it with chunks of cucumber). My solution to this is to order a sandwich that has gyro meat and melted Swiss cheese on it. If you are ever by Ocean beach and decide that you are hungry, walk past the Burger King and get a sandwich from Freddy's.

Freddy's is open again for anyone who missed this deli as much as me!!! Freddy is back and looking great. Make sure you stop by and say hi and pick up one of the best sandwiches or gyros you could ask for. So fresh, it's been 5 months w/o those tasty bites n man I missed that place!

NOT CLOSED!!! I just called this morning and they are open. This is one of my favorite sandwich spots. Fredy's sandwiches put most deli sandwiches to shame. The sour dough bread is always fresh and delicious. So glad he is back in business.

Freddy's is a sure stop when headed to Ocean Beach. We all know that we don't get too many days to frolic along the beach of our shockingly cold pacific ocean but when we do you'll be much happier with one of Freddy's specialties in hand. I am always a fan of turkey on wheat with lettuce, pickles, mayo, mustard. I become an even bigger fan when you have jalapenos or peppercinni to add some kick. This place has classic ingredients and puts out a great picnic sandwich. A great beach deli.

  • Ian E.

Basically Freddy's is one of the best delis I've been to. I can't ask for much more, in fact I can't even think of one complaint about the place. Freddy is so friendly and genuine, as are the rest of the staff. Excellent selection of fresh meats, salads (potato/mac, etc.), pastas, drinks, and little munchies. They have daily specials that rarely/never disappoint. And, c'mon, you can get your sandwich and walk one block to the beach, sit and watch macking waves at Ocean Beach, or walk up to the park. Oh yeah, you can also play the lotto there. Support local business and give Freddy's your $5 instead of Safeway down the street (which does---I admit---make good sandwiches... But that doesn't matter, this isn't a review for Safeway). Thanks Freddy!

the turkey breast on wheat bread, no mayo with added avocado was quite delectable. they have a separate menu board of their combo sandwiches, which you can order by number. ample sized table with red & white plaid/checkered tablecloth are nicely situated in this semi-tiny place located by ocean beach. great customer service!

Love this place =) Everyone who works there is very sweet and nice. I been going here for awhile and they're so good at making sandwiches! Their daily specials are awesome. But you can never go wrong with my favorite -- roast beef with melted jack cheese on dutch crunch with everything on it -- yum! Sandwiches are great!

we love this deli. great owner and staff, great sandwiches made anyway you want them. their bread is very special. Great place to catch a bit when you're in the neighborhood and at the beach. Way better than the Bk not far away. Love you Fredy's Deli!

Never ever ever has there been a sandwich place that delivers with the consistency, integrity and quality of product as Fredy's. Fredy rocks! The woman can be put offish at first, but once she gets to know you and your sandwich, she produces pure magic. Be sure to ask when the bread comes out fresh, cuz its SO worth it!!! And always opt for toasted, add pepperencinis, and get a 22 while you are waiting. Fredy will open it for you.

Hands down the best part about Fredy's is Fredy and Sarah, they are the best!! Sarah is the one that turned me on to my favorite sandwich combo of sourdough turkey and salami with everything, I highly recommend you try it. The sourdough bread is fresh and delicious every time, very high quality meats, cheeses and fixins. They are also very dog friendly and will always give a heap of meat to well behaved pooches. Sometimes the beach patrons that come in are idiots but that is what it is.. Sarah is not only excellent at making great food but also cracking jokes about the Marina folk that act like the sun sets on their spray tanned butts.

Fredy's is the best. This is an SF fixture. I feel like I am at home every time I stop in. I won't lie, I make special trips just to visit Fredy's for a delicious sando and some Fredy-isms, which are also available from Sarah. Fredy's has a great deli selection and some sandwich secrets which I am going to make you visit there to find out about for yourselves.

Came here after going to lands end. Man what a nice place next to the beach on the edge of SF. I ordered 2 sandwiches. It was really good. Big size and good selection of chips. I would go back here again if I was in the city. Reason I gave it 4 stars because parking was a small hassle. Everything else was DA BoMB.

  • Junel S.

Great sandwiches! I got the pastrami and it was one of those sandwiches that I absolutely would have another of. I also like the location of this place because you can grab a sandwich, then walk right over to the beach. They make their sandwiches pretty original, I think they even add a special sauce. Their also generous with their meat! Fredy's definitely has something going for them.

Fresh Baked Sourdough. AHH. Warm, crunchy, chewy, mmm bread. Freddy is super cool. This a gem of a deli. I got the Veggie sandwhich with swiss and spicy sweet mustard. I wish I was eating it right now.

I was there this weekend with a group. We were hungry and saw the 4 star review, so we decided to try it out. 3 people got sandwiches. Only one of them found it to be okay tasting. I got a chicken gyro, and oh boy, it was disgusting. The pita bread was hard, the sauce had no flavor, and I got a stomach ache. The rest of the group got upset and left because the guy DIDN'T WASH HIS HANDS or use any gloves. I was oblivious to it, so a lot of the customers could have done the same.

When you are starving and you don't feel like shelling out the big bucks to eat at the Cliff house, this place is an amazing find. My sandwich was absolutely delicious and the sourdough bread was soft instead of rock hard, which made the sandwich that much more enjoyable. This place is kinda of a jack of trades with the deli sandwiches, russian peroshi, greek baklava, italian tiramisu, gigantic slices of carrot cake, big pickles and of course the large cigarette selection that is available. Plus, you gotta love the regulars who stake out tables and do lotto tickets all day.

I've been to Fredy's about three times now because I kept giving him the benefit of the doubt. The first time, his sandwich gave me a stomach ache. The second time was forgettable, and the third time I bought two muffins which both tasted like store shelf. Fredy, if you are selling food that rang in the Y2K, you need to reconsider your business philosophy before you get sued.

  • Lauren C.

I was already lucky enough to go to the beach on 11/15/10, but stumbling upon Fredy's was the icing on the cake... if the cake was made of roast beef. Like said before, they make their sourdough bread in house, as well as roast beef and roast turkey. My sandwich was excellent, and the people who work there were earnest and a delight. I live so far away that I probably won't be back anytime soon, but its great to know a prime spot out by Ocean Beach.

  • Erin M.

STopped by to pick up some sandwiches to bring to the beach and eat. I always say: the bread makes the sandwich! The sourdough bread they use to make the sandwiches don't just look gorgeous, they taste amazing! Just the right amount of crunch without scraping the skin off the roof your mouth. The portions are a bit large for me. I think a half would do perfectly.

  • Andrew C.

I don't remember how we started coming here after bike rides across the Golden Gate through Marin, but we did . . . and I'm glad. Parking can be tough at times, but it's worth it because Fredy's makes some kick arse sandos. Hot pastrami with swiss on dutch crunch is my standard and they fix it up great here. The folks working are always super friendly which definitely makes the sandwich taste a little better too!

Best Pastrami sandwich I have ever had. The bread is amazing, and Fredy was extremely friendly and helpful.

They had just pulled a bunch of fresh sourdough rolls out of the oven when I walked in. Drool. I felt like I had just walked into someone's house. I opted for #3 with turkey, pastrami, and melted jack cheese on a fresh out of the oven sourdough roll (about $8). The sandwich was warm, very messy and wet. They gave me a stack of napkins but I still needed more. It's a working class sandwich (I agree with Wes M.): hearty, lots of condiments (mustard, mayo), things falling out. Size wise, it satisfies but it's not Little Lucca sized. The pastrami was tender and the fixings were fresh (lettuce, tomato, onion). I like the thick sour pickle slices they include. And the sourdough roll was nice and toasty on top but soft and chewy too. Unfortunately, the bottom of the roll quickly turns soggy. They're open early so you can get a sandwich early if you want (beat the lunch rush) or pick up a breakfast sandwich and coffee. The deli sandwiches are pretty standard but they also have specials (homemade meatball sandwich during my visit), Fredy's combinations, gyros and deli salads. They sell drinks, chips, cigarettes, lottery tickets, wine, pickles and desserts. You can sit inside (they have five small tables) to enjoy your sandwich before the bread gets soggy. Though drippy, messy sandwiches aren't my thing, many people would like Fredy's. Fredy's doing something right - he has 23 years of sandwich making experience.

AMAZING SANDWICHES!!!! I love this place and i have only been here a few times. The sandwiches are really good and the ingredients are fresh. They also sell other things like drinks, chips, pickles, cakes, and doughnuts. i recommend this place to anyone who likes sandwiches.

  • Otto V.

They make the best fresh roasted turkey sandwich in the entire city. Arguello Market has nothing on Fredy's. Great spices (rosemary, sage garlic, etc), comes with cranberry sauce and special garlic/parsley spread upon request. Wedermeyer sourdough bread goes great with this.

I decided to check this place out after receiving a Scoutmob coupon, and ordered the corned beef sandwich on dutch crunch bread. Their dutch crunch is definitely on the sweeter side, which is fine, but the bread was not as soft and chewy as Ike's or Freddie's Sandwiches in North beach... though maybe if I had asked for my bread toasted it would have been better. The corned beef was not that vivid red that I love. The Dijon mustard is very horseradish-y -- good, but is definitely the dominant flavor in the sandwich. Fredy's is ok for the price (sans coupon) -- I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but I'll keep it in mind next time I'm at Ocean Beach.

A great sandwich is like a great guy. You know, that one great guy with the soft and sweet exterior with just the right amount of cheese and spice to keep you wanting more. That one tasty guy who is spontaneous enough to play Chicken in traffic on Monday, strut like a Turkey in the Club on Friday, and be Ham'n it up at the local watering hole Sunday. When you meet that desirable foot long, believe me, you'll know! I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon my sandwich soul mate. When I walked into Fredy's Ocean Beach Deli it looked just like an ordinary hole in the wall deli, but in actuality it was everything but that. It wasn't just the freshly made bread and ripe ingredients that won me over, it was that Fredy was such a ridiculously and genuinely nice person! Fredy and I stroke up a conversation after I asked him if he could add some Tabasco to my honey-peppered turkey sandwich. We discussed our likings for everything spicy and he offered me an array of different hot sauce choices to try. I ended up choosing the Dave's Gourmet Roasted Red Pepper and Chipotle Hot Sauce. To top it off, Fredy also had the Mendocino mustard. Talk about a delicious eye watering combination! After a few bites and a couple of Oooooohs and Ahhhhhhhs, I realized I had finally found the one. My honey-peppered turkey sandwich on a sourdough roll was a match made in heaven. Deep down inside, I know it wasn't Dave's Gourmet sauce or the Mendocino mustard that caused me to cry huge tears of joy, but the realization that my long arduous search had ended. I had finally found my one and only, my sandwich soul mate. Honey-Peppered Turkey Sandwich with Roasted Red Pepper and Chipotle Hot Sauce, with a dollop of Mendocino Mustard and all the fixings, I have been looking for your intense deliciousness and flavor all my life. I know I live all the way out in Alameda and your in San Francisco's Outer Richmond, but I truly think this long distance thing could actually work. So.......whattaya say??? Meet up next weekend?

What can I say that hasn't already been said? This place freakin' rocks. If you're grabbing some food for the beach, screw Safeway's deli counter, STOP AT FREDY'S!! The staff: Awesome! Super friendly and surprisingly knowledgeable about all things "sandwich". The Food: Best sandwiches I've had in SF, and yes, I've been to Ike's. Great selection of chips, soft drinks and beer to accompany your sandwich. Ambiance: Most of the time you're going to grab your food to-go and head to the beach. Warning: On windy days you're just going to end up with sand in your sandwich. For these days, Fredy's has a cozy little eating area. They also have a pretty complete collection of Dave's Gourmet items available (including the infamous Dave's Insanity Sauce). So, yeah, solid five stars.

  • Ryan M.

Even if the food here was terrible, I'd still come in regularly because the people that run the place are so goddamn nice. But the food is awesome! Obviously you are stupid if you ever decline the offer for a fresh sourdough roll, which always seem to be right out of the oven. I don't know how, but the special is almost always something I'm craving that day. They have Mendocino Mustard here. That alone is a five-star feat (so hard to find in the city delis). And they have beer. If the bums weren't already holed up next door at the Burger King, I'd probably live here.

    (5)
  • Tyler C.

First off I would like to remind you that 3 stars means A-OK and that's what this place is. I paid about $7 for a smoked turkey sandwich on sourdough with everything on it. Bread was good, the meat was above average and the produce (lettuce onion pickle tomato) was reasonably fresh. Nothing fancy just a basic sandwich. The proportions of meat and produce between the bread wasn't small enough to complain about, but not generous enough to warrant praise. Service was quick and somewhat friendly Oh ya, they have a half decent beer selection (no taps just bottles and cans) but it's a bit pricey. So ya, it's just fine.

Fredy's is my type of deli. No nonsense crap, just good sandwiches. All I want in a sandwich is a sourdough roll, some meat, cheese and a little bit of salad and Fredy;'s serves that up perfectly. This spot is perfect for the few days in San Francisco when you get a chance to "enjoy" Ocean Beach. Just grab a turkey and pepper jack on sourdough and you are good to go. Also parking isn't even bad. Scoutmob turned us onto Fredy's and I am glad it did!! 2 sandwiches, 2 drinks, small mac salad all for 11 bucks??? I'll take it every day. Bonus tip: If you bring your four legged friend, they might throw some roast beef for them (Awesome).

  • Lauren S.

This place has delicious sandwiches! I'm a big fan of the roasted chicken and bacon sammich here. But I have heard magical things about their pulled pork sammich that I know I will have to try here sometime. Although a bit hard to get to, it's a great place to get your food to go and then head over to the beach. Luckily enough, they also have a liquor store ATTACHED. So beer and sammiches galore! So it's a one stop shop, and you get the pleasure of knowing you're supporting local business ;) And getting a kick ass bacon sammich at the same time.

  • Kyle S.

I found this place one day looking for lunch after a good day on the beach. Fredy's uses top quality ingredients and I might have to say the best sourdough bread for a deli I have ever eat. Bring the pooch cause they cant resist hookin man's best friend up too! I met some really nice elderly folks outside the joint that told me they have been regulars for 20+ years and eat Fredy's 2-3 times a week. Yea, its that good!

  • Robert S.

Oh mama, these are delicious sandwiches. The place is a little bit hard to find if you aren't sure of it's location, but the orange sign helps. It definitely feels like a place that people in the immediate vicinity know about, and maybe not much else. I couldn't decide on the turkey or pastrami, but joy of joys, they already had the combo as a special! I sometimes want to mix meats, but I'm never sure of how it'll be, and some places just don't wanna do it. Not here! I got it on the sourdough roll, which was spectacular. The pastrami and turkey were both excellent (probably should try each individually). It was a little pricier than I guessed, but the sandwich was huge, so I can't really complain. It actually was enough for me to eat for the whole day. I'll absolutely be sure to return here next time I'm in the Ocean Beach area (which should be a lot, as long as the beach Ultimate league runs).

  • Sean MC E.

This is the only sammich place that gives me complete package!! I can't help but go at least once a week. The daily specials are amazing and their sides are out of this world, and quite frankly the prices make it out of control. Honestly nothing beats having a basketball, their bean salad and a cold beer out by the beach, which is conveniently a hop and a skip away. Seriously go check it out you won't be disappointed!!!

SOURDOUGH BREAD. You don't even have to ask, they just suggest it for you : D : D : D So happy my gf lives up the street from this deli. I go often, they have great daily special sandwiches as well as delish combos. Pastrami reuben is my staple though ;)

Good sandwiches. Yummy and nice portions. Great salads too. They have other fun sides/snacks, and drinks too. As for service...it depends....the guy is friendly but the chick is on PMS rage or something. I wish I still lived close enough to make a trip here...but parking is a total pain.

Fresh, hot bread starts off the BEST deli sandwich in SF. The meatball sandwich is so good!!!

Possibly the best sando in the city. Totally old school deli style. All the sandwich makers are super nice. Pretty pricey for a sandwich but worth it

How could I have lived in the city for 11 years and never had a sandwich from Fredy's until yesterday? It's a shame, because their warm sourdough rolls are amazing! I live in the Castro and work in Pacific Heights, but at lunch time today I made a special trip out to Ocean Beach to have another sandwich. I wanted to make sure that it really was as good as I remembered from the day before....and it was!!! I couldn't wait to tear into my sandwich so I drove back to my office eating along the way. You know that gurgly, slack-jawed sound Homer Simpson makes when he's calorically satisfied? Yeah, that was the sound I was making. Yum!

Pretty decent place to get a sandwich. I have my usual spots that i favor, but if im in the area i have no reservations about hitting up Fredy's. The sandwiches are good, ive been a couple times now and i cant complain. Bread is baked fresh daily, and i love the sourdough rolls here. Staff are friendly and its right by the beach. Cant beat that.

Gyro was bland, bread microwaved to rubber. Will not return.

Don't matter what you put between the bread, their SOURDOUGH is the real deal and vitally important to the sandwich experience at Fredy's. Avoid the imposter: dutch crunch! It is merely a charlatan bread dressed in dutch crunch's clothing! The masterful selection and proportions of the fresh ingredients used in every sandwich is what truly separates them from the chains and the wannabes. I proclaim thief! Because they have stolen my heart. =)

I thought about giving 3.5 stars, but considering where it's located I'll bump it up to 4 for now. I've been here a couple of times now, and I think to get the most out of this place, you're better off getting the daily special, which I haven't tried yet. The first time I went, I was actually a little disappointed with my pastrami sandwich. The sourdough roll was excellent, but the pastrami itself was rather lean and there wasn't a whole lot of it either. I probably will not get anything with the pastrami here again, but I'm picky about my pastrami. The 2nd time I got one of the combos, a turkey and ham sandwich on sourdough. While I enjoyed it far more than I did the pastrami and there was certainly a bit more heft to the sandwich, I'm not sure that I would get this over the nearby Safeway. This place has a lot going for it though - there's a good variety of different deli salads to choose from, as well as a huge selection of potato chips, and the employees here are incredibly friendly. There's seating available inside, and it also serves as a convenience store of sorts, so if you're heading out to Ocean Beach it's a great spot to pick up soda, cigarettes and beer along with a sandwich. Overall it's a great find in a random neighborhood, and I'll definitely be back to try one of the specials or if I get my lazy butt out of bed early enough, one of the breakfasts - in either event, it'll probably be something with bacon.

El Hub and I have been coming here for years...and I should tell you there are actually few deli establishments that he will rave about. The bread here is fresh...soft. My personal fave is the egg salad. El Hub loves the daily specials. It's on a street that doesn't have tons of parking, but if it's a nice day, you should grab your sammie and head down to the beach.

This place is great. Just plain good old sandwiches. Loads of choices...the special is always a good pick. Sourdough is amaaaaazing. And the woman who works there is always so nice and personable! Yuum

great spot! we were at the beach and craving sandwiches on a sunny day and thanks to Yelp we were guided to Fredy's. very tasty sandwiches, fresh bread and fresh meats. we will be back on our next trip to the beach. very nice workers also.

Wow. Today after a yelp session for food by ocean beach. A nice bike ride later, I came in jokingly and asked the guy if he was Fredy. To my surprise he answered "Yes." After dreaming about their turkey bacon creation the whole way there, I had a whim that I could trust Fredy's judgment. He suggested the fridays special MEATBALL sandwich. Which just happened to be my favorite type of sandwich, i knew this guy was good. A very short wait later it was time. The Meatball Sandwich on Sourdough with Onions and Peppers. For the size, it was PACKED with flavor, really really tasty. The onions worked perfectly in harmony with the peppers, meatballs and cheese. super BOMB.The sourdough does wonders with the meatball and sauce, so light crispy and fresh. It wasn't the biggest meatball sandwich I have eaten BUT by far one of the tastiest, and my ass has devoured a lot of meatball sands. I cant wait for the next one. Fredy's (Fo Sho! Thee) Ocean Beach Deli.

I know I give almost every business I review five stars. But this is only because I only bother to rave about places I have found exceedingly satisfactory, a wonderful experience or bad. Fredy's goes into the ES category. The sandwiches are awesome. This is not your run of the mill deli sandwich place. Everything has a personal touch. For example, the tuna sandwich is not made with mayonnaise but a sweet and delicous dressing. I could wrong about the ingredients as Fredy refuses to impart his recipe. I'm a fan and I look forward to being in the area or the mood for a sandwich so that I can come here 5 cheers for Fredy's!

I went out of my way to try this place out after reading all of the yelp reviews. It's definitely the best place to grab a meal under $10 within a half mile radius, but that's not saying much when the only places around are Beach Chalet, Burger King, Cliff House, and Safeway. I don't understand what was supposed to be so special about the daily special. All I know is that my sandwich was $1.60 more than my friend's sandwich. I couldn't tell you what the difference was between the two. He had turkey; I had turkey. I paid more because I ordered the special. It tasted alright, but it wasn't anything worth raving about in my mind. Average deli fare.

Best deli/sandwich place EVER! I've been going to Fredy's since I was a little kid. Sandwiches are absolutely delicious and the portions are huge! Prices are higher than other sandwich places, but you get a lot for your money. The daily specials are amazing. I highly recommend the tuesday, wednesday & friday's specials. Fredy's pulled pork is one of the best I've ever tasted. The breakfast sandwich and an orangina is a perfect way to start a day. Service is fast and "unique"... Keep in mind that the "meaner" Fredy is, the more he likes you as a customer. I feel like family every time I walk in there.

Exactly what a deli was meant to be... - Great food, more than just superb sandwiches. - Excellent drink selection. - Super-friendly staff. - Good seating. - Reasonable prices.

YUM! Great sandwiches, great selection, friendly workers, right by the beach, and walking distance to my house. Less than $10 gets me a sandwich that is so massive I can only ever finish half in one sitting (and typically only about 1/3!) and I am a huge fan of that since I am a broke college student that is always down to turn $10 into 3 meals. Besides, I never have time to make myself a lunch before running out the door to an internship or a class so its pretty awesome to have a big hunk of one of these delicious sandwiches at the ready in my fridge.

Probably wouldn't make a special trip, but if I was in the area and wanted a sandwich, would definitely stop in. Tried smoked turkey with everything on it. I'm not a fan of sourdough, but did like Fredy's....a mild sour taste and very fresh. Did not intend to eat the whole sandwich, thinking I'd save half for later...but....ate the whole thing in one sitting. Washed it down with an Anchor. A very good lunch. This would make a nice beach meal...you're steps away.

Freddy is the best sandwichier around. His specials are the best, check out his website. He bakes his bread fresh, and roasts some of his own meats. If you don't know about Freddy's then you don't know about sandwiches.

I really can't recall the number of times I've been here, 15, 20? Somewhere in that range I suppose. Anywho, seeing as I've been here so many times, I really must comment on the consistency of the place. I have almost always gotten their smoked turkey (always warm). I've also tried their roast beef. Everytime is just as delicious as the first time :) It's also really convenient if it's a nice day and you are just killing time. If you're not in a rush, I suggest waiting until they bring out some fresh bread (YES they bake it themselves). Fresh bread makes the world a better place..unless you're on one of those no carb diets. Just one caveat: If you get the lady to make you a sandwich, you're in good hands, I've heard through the grapevine that the man can be a little bitch sometimes.

  • Kimiko Q.

This place is great! They make delicious sandwiches. My favourite is turkey on sourdough: wonderful warm, soft, slightly sour bread that seems to melt in your mouth. Meat stacked high, no "Subway" service here! One time the guy got my order wrong. I said nothing extra on my sandwich (I was ordering for two and abhore mayo/mustard so there's no way I'd ask for it) and he said I told him I wanted everything on both. He remade my sandwich and made me feel better. The sandwich was sooo good that it melted away my grief. Sometimes I go out of my way during my lunch break to get a sandwich here. Sometimes I get two sandwiches a day. If you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend this deli!

Maybe I just haven't ordered the correct things, or I've gone on the wrong days, but after two visits I won't be able to force myself back to Fredy's. The lamb gyro on my first visit was pretty decent, but in no way anything to write home about. I left wondering if I had actually eaten at the same place that had all the rave reviews on Yelp. I was willing to return though and give the place a second try. The second time around I ordered the day's special, a reuben with kraut, swiss, on dutch crunch. I was a little irked that the daily special was still $8, but the service was very attentive and the sandwich looked great. But it was oh-so disappointing at every bite. The thousand island dressing had way too much sugar in it; I felt like I was eating a dessert reuben. The bread was crunchy on the outside, but was dense and gummy on the inside. The quantity of kraut and pastrami was lacking. I wound up throwing away half the bread (the half saturated with the dressing) which left quite a meager amount of food for the price. Overall, the whole affair left me feeling rather grossed out. Best of luck to the owner and his little deli, and to all you ardent fans. I guess I must be missing something about this place, but at this point I've hit my limit on paying for disappointment.

Wish there were more stars! Best place to get a sandwich in the city! The sandwiches are amazing, Fredy roasts his own meat and the sourdough bread is always fresh baked. Been coming here forever and always treated like family. Fredy is amazing. He always has a fist full of "scraps" for our pup (who loves him and positively quivers with excitement every time we head his way) and I'm not sure my life would be complete without his spicy pulled pork sandwiches (Wed special) This place is always good and I always leave with a smile on my face. When in doubt order the special on sourdough. The Gyros are delicious also!

Fredys is absolutely amazing. I live in San Jose, my boyfriend lives in San Francisco and whenever I go up to visit him Fredys is a MUST. The sourdough bread? It's to die for. Freshly baked. Warm and crunchy on the outside yet still soft on the inside?! It doesnt matter what kinda meat you get in there, its all amazing with this bread!! Fredy and the employees there are also great. Theyre very patient and friendly with everyone. They even remember you and what you had talked about the previous week with them. I wish there was a Fredys in San Jose so I could enjoy it as often as I would like. I would suggest this place to anyone and everyone!!

When I was on a recent bike ride to the beach, I got a flat tire around Ocean Beach and Ortega. I thought "no worries, there's a bike shop near Safeway so I'll just walk to it and there will be someone who can save Brownie (my brown bike) from his deathbed." The bike shop I was thinking about was actually Freddie's... and the reason I thought it was a bike shop is because I passed it a few weeks ago and remembered seeing five guys in their spandex and thousand dollar bikes hanging outside the store. As I walked up to Freddie's, excited that my troubles would be solved, I let out a huge sigh (and possibly a low moan that could have easily been misconstrued as being pleasured) when I realized it was actually a sandwich shop. "Sandwiches!" I thought. "How the hell is a sandwich gonna get me home?" I walked inside and, despite the fact that I was inches away from a California beach, I felt like I could have been in a random deli in New York. I walked up to the counter and asked the man (Freddie?) if he knew if there were any bike shops around. He said there's one near the Haight and one on Balboa... but he wasn't sure where it was and when it was open. Awesome. But my stomach got the best of me so I ordered the ham & swiss sandwich. The default bread is apparently their sourdough but I opted for wheat bread (which turned out to be bread from a loaf... not a roll like I was hoping). Everything was large about this sandwich: tons of meat, lots of lettuce and tomatoes, and a lot of mustard. I mean, we're talking dripping-off-the-sandwich-and-into-the-napkins "lot of mustard." But I was starving and scarfed half of the sandwich down. I ended up finishing the other half of the sandwich somewhere around Balboa and 33rd... sitting on the steps of a church... eating ham... on Yom Kippur. Worst. Jew. Ever.

It's hard to find a quick and reasonable lunch while visiting GG park. This is very close and not too expensive. We both ordered the special of the day and it was good. We noticed after ordering that all the regulars specify the Mendocino mustard. Wish we had known that in advance.

  • Lauren T.

I always noticed this place in the top 10 richmond restaurants and finally checked it out while shooting an event at Ocean Beach. They were all out of mortadella-king of the deli meats(shame on them!). However, the turkey and swiss I had instead was very tasty, on an especially great Dutch crunch roll. Not 5 stars in my book, but it sure beats a Safeway sandwich.

  • Dave K.

This place is bomb! A friend took me here following a freezing Ocean Beach surf and I had a delicious and badly needed Hot Turkey and Swiss. My buddie asked for a Mendocino mustard and, having never been here before, I seconded the motion. Hello! The meat to cheese ratio was perfect, the veggies were crisp, and the bread... the bread is where it's at! Crunchy outside, soft in the middle, just sublime. So a few days later, I bring a friend to Freddie's for their breakfast sandwich; which friend#1 had hyped at the previous visit. Sure enough, they whip 'em up fresh. The ham and eggs are folded together into a round omlette and placed into an English Muffin with cheese. So good! I found my new favorite post surf sando spot. Auf.

I love Fredy's. I'm an extreme (never recovering) turkey sandwich addict, and when I first moved to outer sunset, I was determined to find my new source. I Googled "deli" along with my address and Fredy's popped up... grabbed my keys, my wallet, and my dignity, and headed over to Fredy's for the first time. Since my first time, I've been in even more deep doo-doo with my turkey sandwich addiction, and I have Fredy's to thank for that. Fredy and Sarah always treat me as if I've known them for years and they recite my order (by memory) before I can even say "hey." It feels good to walk in on a busy, sunny beach day, walk right past all of the out-of-towners and have a conversation with Fredy and Sarah about all the narks on the beach. Always leave with a smile, and a happy stomach. P.S. The pulled pork is amazing, however I never get anything but the turkey... But if it's pulled pork day and you're too stubborn to try something aside from your usual, you might get lucky enough to snag a taste of it.

When you have the option between Burger King, Safeway, Europa Express or Fredy's... the choice is clear. This is where I go to refuel after a morning surf session. The breakfast sando, served until 11 is the bomb. Think Egg McMuffin... with real ingredients. I also dig their daily specials (big sandwiches for 5.99). You can always play it safe with the smoked turkey, hot pepper jack and mendo mustard on dutch crunch. Take it to the lot at Kelly's and sit on the bed of your truck. A delicious meal with a view! Fredy himself is awesome! Regardless of who you are, or how long you've been coming there, he'll always talk shit. My brother came in wearing a Champ Bailey jersey and he almost refused to serve him.

Came here with my boyfriend, his aunt and her boyfriend after hiking around in the area. I got the hot turkey and pastrami with jack cheese on a sourdough roll fresh out of the oven. It was AMAZING! My boyfriend opted for hot turkey and salami with cheese and he loved his as well. Friendly staff and delicious deli sandwiches. I would love to come back again next time we are in the area!

You gotta love this little block of La Playa, with its handful of shops so unobtrusively tucked away even the Burger King is almost inviting. Aside from that, you've got your Russian video store, your surf shop, your dry cleaners...and of course Fredy's--just about the only take-out within walking distance of Ocean Beach or a picnic at Sutro Heights. The sandwiches are very working-class, nothing fancy, but plenty big, generous on the meat without getting ridiculous, and served on some of the most insanely fresh and chewy sourdough rolls I have ever had. Several tables if you want to eat in too.

  • Brian P.

I guess i ordered the wrong sandwich, it seriously wasn't that great of a sandwich. I ordered a turkey sandwich on dutch crutch, along with monterey jack cheese, and all the condiment. I had way better at little luccas, or even the Submarine. The sandwiches were huge, but it was missing something... i not sure what it was, but it didn't seem right. Maybe because it wasn't toasted, or maybe because it was missing the garlic/pesto sauce.. i just can't figure it out. maybe next time when i come here i'll order the pulled pork or the corned beef sandwich. That looks quite interesting!

  • Aron L.

So my impression of Fredy's based on a bunch of Yelp reviews was that this place has the best sandwiches in the city... and I'll admit they were pretty damn good but not the best. I have a foolproof scientific method of reviewing sandwich shops because whenever I go to a sandwich place (which is a lot because I love sandwiches), I always order a roast beef sandwich, so I can judge how well it compares to all the other roast beefs I've had. Then I order a house special sandwich so I can judge how well a sandwich shop performs in its respective specialty, e.g. Gene's Atomic Sub, Lou's LLB Special or Toasties Crab Melt. -Fredy's is pretty good for what it's worth. A decently sized sandwich with good fillings. And the bread is AMAZING. Always, always, always order the sourdough bread. It is toasted to perfection and in my opinion, it makes the sandwich. -I ordered the ROAST BEEF and the day's special, HONEY PEPPERED TURKEY with swiss cheese. It's not the most massive piling of meat I've ever seen, but its definitely well proportioned. One issue I had was with the roast beef: it was a little chewy and tough. But the turkey was perfect. -The dressings can be a little messy. The mustard and mayo are just smothered on the bread. It makes the sandwich layers slide around too much. And a good sandwich is all about the layers in each bite. I think the excessive amount of condiments are what keeps these sammies from achieving greatness. -If you love heat, definitely ask for JALAPEÑOS. Fredy's has WHOLE pickled jalapeños so the seeds retain their kick, unlike the sliced pickled jalapeños that are sweeter than I like. -HUGE variety of chips, if you like putting chips in your sandwich for the extra crunch. -The owner (I think) makes the sandwiches soooo fast. Fredy's might qualify as a fast food restaurant at the rate that he spits those bad boys out. Fredy's isn't the best sandwich I've ever had but it's definitely up there. For around $7-8, you get a decently sized sandwich with good meat and toasted sourdough you'll be dreaming about for weeks. If you are a sandwich connoisseur, I really recommend that you check this place out.

  • Brian H.

If you live in the OR, Freddy's needs to be on your rotunda. If you are visiting OB, the is THE spot to grab a sammy and head out to the beach, Lands End, Sutro Baths, GGP, etc... Not much for enviance inside so i always grab-n-go.....but I am a sucker for anyone who makes their own meats - aka doesnt buy prefab Oscar Meyer Brand roast beef or turkey, etc. Can't go wrong w/ the daily specials but I usually get the Roast Beef b/c it's cooked freaking perfectly rare everytime. Oh, and he's got huge Kosher Dill pickles that he will gladly quarter for you....so good. Tough to come by good deli's in SF these days and this is one of them, especially if you are in need of a killer sandwich, chips and a drink to go and enjoy the local sights....

    (5)
  • Liana C.

Fredy's is a neighborhood deli where the owner is always funny and friendly. My favorite is the black forest ham with melted provolone cheese on soft roll. They make them fast and a great to pick up if you are going to the beach or golden gate park.

  • Jaymee S.

As far as sandwiches go...this place is freaking amazing. Fresh sourdough rolls hot out of the oven as I walked in...I got the roasted turkey with melted jack special. So glad I did. So wish I ordered two so I could have one now. I'm hungry just thinking about it....

  • Annika C.

Ah, Fredy's Deli. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways... A friend brought me to Fredy's over a year ago. Little did I know what I had been missing. Freshly baked sourdough rolls out of the oven. Smoked turkey with pepperjack cheese, bacon, mayo, high-maintenance mustard (Mendocino mustard), tomatoes and peppercinis...my mouth is watering just thinking of my usual sandwich. You know how some sandwiches just aren't good? It can be the same ingredients, but the person making them doesn't give two you know whats about the sandwich. You can taste that difference. Well, at Fredy's the sandwiches are made with love...and a healthy dose of good humor/sarcasm. If you like hilarious banter, definitely go this place. It's definitely a neighborhood joint and all the regulars get to know each other as well. I go for the people (Fredy and Sarah rock!), it's just icing on the cake that the sandwiches are to die for. I'm really going to miss this place and Fredy and Sarah when I move. Le sigh.

My friends and I happened to be coming back from the beach down the street craving gyros and found this hidden gem. The owner was very nice and offered donuts to myself and 5 friends(very delicious). Lamb Gyros were great. But would've loved it to be a little fresher and have real cucumbers in the sauce. Nevertheless, for the location and friendly service I would definitely recommend it.

Mmmm, a nice gyro after a trip to the beach. Great idea, right? Wrong! Sauce had almost no flavor and sitting on top was a giant slice of onion. Also no lettuce and it was so small I had eat some chicken afterwards to get full. Bah! Woulda been happier with a whopper from the BK next door.

  • Aan N.

I 've got to agree with the majority of the reviews before me. Yumm yumm yumm! The make it or break it for me when it comes to a sandwich is the bread. And this bread was to die for! I had a sourdough roll that seemed like it just popped out of the oven. It was delicious! I normally don't get any meat on my sandwich but I had to venture out and try the smoked pepper turkey. Again, yumm yumm! We made it just before the lunch crowd but that didn't seem to matter. The employees treated us like we were regulars. I don't come to this area of san francisco often but I would def go back the next time I do!

  • Courtney N.

Fredy's makes, hands down, the best sandwich I have ever had. I like a pretty simple sandwich and I opt-out on the shredded lettuce, so I don't have any gripes about that like fellow yelpers. And sure you're not going to get parking right in front of the store, but seriously, park a block away and walk--it's still closer parking than if you went ANYWHERE else in they city. Some tips: Get either the dutch crunch or their fresh sourdough. Opt for the toasted (yum!) and they also have a really good mendocino mustard that is a nice addition. To all the people that say "the chick" is rude: ARE YOU ON CRACK? First off, her name is Sarah. And just because she doesn't drop to the ground and kiss your ass when you walk in the door does not mean that she has an attitude. In fact, I think she has exactly the opposite of a bad attitue--when I go to Fredy's she is always remembers me and my sandwich, she's happy, smiling and she calls everybody "sweetie" (or some other similarly cute, non-attitudey name). The only thing mean about her is her sandwiches. As in, the woman makes a mean sandwich.

    (5)
  • Tangerine L.

If I die, I will know I have gone to hell if there were no sandwiches there. I always get turkey and swiss. I don't care for the shredded lettuce, but I don't mind it. And yes, I want that toasted up, please. Part of the reason why I love this place so much is that when I first lived in SF, I lived in the outer Richmond, which was a kind of hell. Salty and foggy and cold. I would wander alone until the fog dispersed a bit and unveiled this place to me. Suddenly, the cold ocean and sandy wind didn't seem so bad. Fredy's would be a weekly treat. And I have always been treated with respect there--maybe not a smile and a thank you, but with respect. I still drive across the city, order my sandwich, and sit in my car and watch as the ocean try to reclaim the land again.

I have to update my review and clear up that the lady behind the counter was rude but the guy who works here is super dope. I came in for an aqua and he redeemed the customer service. OG review: 1.5 stars Fredy's doesn't impress me at all. The service is awful. No, I didn't order an attitude with that sandwich! I shouldn't have ordered that sandwich in the first place. If you like processed cheese and slimy lunch meat disguised as a hot sub this is the sandwich place for you! The pre made deli food can't even save this place, gross! 1 star for the location, the only thing I do like about this spot, and 1/2 star for the baked goods which are just OK. Coming from a sweet tooth-er I would never crave any of the cakes and cookies I've had here. I would come in to grab a drink, bag of chips, or candy bar. All the packaged name brand stuff.

I love Fredy's!! Great sandwiches, many great combinations or make up your own. Perfect if you are near the beach, get a sandwich, chips and soda (or wine, they have that too ;) Great, friendly staff! Prepare to wait during lunch hours and weekends, it gets busy. But, soooo worth the wait.

If you like eating delicious sandwiches then this place is for you. I was near the beach with family and my girlfriend and we wanted to get a bite to eat and Fredy's came up on her Yelp App and we decided to try it out. Ok the bad parts, no parking and the price is a tad, not a lot, high. But that's it. besides that this place was great. We all got sandwiches and I cant speak for everyone but we all ate the entire thing. I got a salami and turkey sandwich (the #8 I believe). I got it on fresh baked sourdough bread, that just about melted in my mouth. The food was very well made, tastes great, and is fresh. The potions are pretty huge and you can choose from many drinks, chips, and candies to go along with your sandwich. Overall this place is as good at it gets! I don't live near the place but next time I am around the area I am for sure coming back.

The Best Sourdough Roll in town. Walk in around 11:30 and when they cut the bread for your sandwich the steam rises...Pastrami and their combinations are really worth the price. Everything is fresh and tastes like it. I love the thin sliced purple onions....I have one friend who will only eat Tuna here and nowhere else.... I been going to Fredy's for years and I have never had a bad experience....

Thank you for making a perfect sandwich! Drop the price $1 so I have enough to tip when I pay with a $10 bill. Otherwise, on point with everything. Right amount of ingredients makes me come back twice a week!

I had heard about this place from a friend and read the great yelp reviews, so one morning I decided to stroll up that way and see what it was all about. The food was remarkably delicious, more so than I expected. The service was very friendly and the staff was personable. The prices were good. Location is great, if only for those of us who can actually find this place. (It seems kinda hidden, can't imagine that's great for business.) I definitely recommend this Fredy's, a fantastic sandwich shop near the ocean.

I love the bread. This is probably the most important part of the sandwich and most overlooked. It is, as the other Yelpers attest, crispy and crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Contrast this to your typical deli sandwich from a grocery store, which is when I start doing my impression of a dog chewing a rawhide bone. The people behind the counter are friendly as all heck. This is totally worth driving all the way out, parking next to sketchy Rasta homeless man in Safeway parking lot, and getting a couple of sandwiches. The first time we went here, I insisted insisted insisted we eat by the beach. It was hard because it was kinda windy, and the sandwiches, you know, even with the best of intentions, stuff falls out on occasion. Steve J. got a little grumpy. "But this is my dream!" I cried. "This? This is your dream?" "Yes!" "Well, if this was your dream, we could've done this a little sooner." [note: we've known each other about 6 years.] "I didn't want to make you come all the way out here." "Well, if it was your dream, I'm sure I could've accommodated." [note: this passes as heart-felt affection from Steve J.] So, there you have it. Fredy's Ocean Beach Deli: makin' dreams come true. Even belatedly.

In a head to head competition and evaluation of Freddy's vs. Java Beach, hot turkey and pepperjack on dutch crunch with everything, and I mean everything, I must declare Java Beach the Overall Winner. Freddy's far outdoes Java beach though on the dutch crunch taste, freshness and buttery crackly top and the friendly gentleman behind the counter goes above and beyond the counter help at Java Beach. Does that mean the sandwich-face-off of 2009 is a wash? Nope. Just means that I'll opt for Java Beach when I have a hankering for the outdoor dining and perfect pickle/pepperocini/filling ratio and you'll find me at Freddy's for the daily specials and amazing dutch crunch!

I stumbled across this deli purely by accident while looking for a lunch spot down by the beach on a cold August afternoon. Freddy's was like an oasis of fresh-baked and chewy sourdough, drool-inducing meats, and reasonable prices. I asked the ultra-friendly sandwich artist what she would recommend for someone craving an Italian sub and I believe she gave me a #5 with mortadella. pepperoncini, and other deliciousness. Just be forewarned that it comes served on what amounts to a loaf of bread -- that sandwich lasted two days for me.

Fred makes the pulled pork sandwich on Wednesdays only. This is a shame, its one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. I have told him to do it more days a week, but he feels he should change it up to keep people coming back. Hes dead wrong on this one, I know for myself I am willing to walk an extra mile a week to have this sandwich twice. For now I just buy one eat half and have the other the next day. Sometimes I buy two and spread it out over two days. One day I bought two and ate them both in one day. It's that good. My girlfriend was mad that day when she did not get one. Now I'm only allowed to go with her to buy them. Sometimes I miss the Wednesday because I'm busy or out of town. I like fred a lot, but there needs to be another day of this great sandwich. When you go in there tell him there needs to be two days a week of the pulled pork. Bring signs, make T' shirts, whatever it takes. I'm not the only one who feels this way, he just needs to be pushed a little. If you're at the beach on a Wednesday go in and try this sandwich. It's really something special.

If you are one to think that bread makes a sandwich then get a sandwich on the fresh baked sourdough roll. Huge sandwiches with generous meat and they'll melt cheese if you want.

  • Jimmy C.

Always a great sammich. It's not fine dining, but it's much more convenient to have in the 'hood. The special is usually something I want, and I always get their meatloaf speacial. Beer in the fridge, available in large size. Take it in a brown bag and go sit on the sea wall across the way. I'd drive to this shop from another neighborhood if I had to.

I have been going here for 5 years now. I used to live right down the street and went everyday, ordered a different sandwich/gyro/hotdog/beer /breakfast sandwich everytime, I was never disappointed. I since have moved away and I go back bi monthly just to get a sandwich and a beer and shoot the shit with Freddie. Even when freddie is not there, his back up, I think her name is Elaine? is even awesome, If you have written a bad review about this place you are an official HATER and need to eat more fast food and die sooner.....

Ever looking to fulfill that east coast sandwich hankering? This place will satiate those feelings. These people are into the art of sandwich building. I love the service, every time with a smile! The bread is freshly baked Their daily specials are delish, fresh roasted turkey, pulled pork, sloppy joes, pretty wide variety of daily specials. Come here occasionally, but EVERY time they remember me! I suggest skipping $5 safeway sandwich that leaves you empty in the wrong places, stroll down the block and bite into a Fredy special!

  • Christine Evelyn T.

Great sandwiches and great customer service. I'm a fan of their sourdough and dutch crunch rolls. It gives their sandwiches that extra kick. They're pretty generous with putting condiments on the sandwiches, including cheese, veggies, and mayo. For the "wow" factor, ask them to toast your sandwich - it'll definitely be ooey gooey goodness. Their sandwiches are pretty big, so it's a great place to go if you're extremely hungry. If you have a significant other, try to bring them along too. Everytime my bf and I eat here, the lady behind the counter writes "his" and "hers" on our respective sandwiches. Cute.

  • Jen D.

I can't speak to their deli sandwiches, but I love their gyros. Counter staff are incredibly friendly and get to know their regulars. The location is perfect for a to just about anywhere in the neighborhood--Land's End, Sutro Park, the beach, Golden Gate Park.

Best sandwiches in SF hands down. My favorite is the Turkey & Pastrami w/ Jack Cheese on Sourdough. Mmmmmm goooood! Everything is fresh, their sourdough is perfectly baked and they're not stingy. Oh I also Loooooove their potato & egg salad. Freddy is a friendly guy, prices are reasonable. Well worth the trip.

So, I used to live on 48th avenue, a mere block from Fredy's, but alas I didn't discover Fredy's until 6 months before I moved - all the way across town to Potrero hill. I've tried Klein's, I've tried Jay's (who took over Klein's) and I even tried Hazel's . I kept thinking how hard can this be, all I want in the world is a neighborhood deli where I can get a fresh-made, still warm, sourdough roll with thinly (I mean thinly) sliced provolone, yellow mustard, mayo, pickles, tomatoes, shredded lettuce and avocado. I wasn't even asking that anyone remember what I order every time I come in. As it turns out none of the deli's in my new neighborhood will ever compare to Fredy's, and so I find myself trying to come up with excuses to go to the Outer Richmond just so I can get my sandwich fix. And yes, they still remember what I order every time I come in, and yes their sourdough is still warm and there lettuce is still shredded. Whenever I make my way to Fredy's I feel like I'm coming home to the best damn sandwich in SF - I've even driven all the way from the eastbay just to get my sandwich and drive back again - now that is either dedication or some sort of strange sandwich addiction.

Sandwich sandwich sandwich sandwich, pastrami pastrami pastrami, everything except tomatoes please! This place is my go-to deli for a delicious mouth-watering pastrami sandwich. Not only are the sandwiches good, the location is great as well! After buying your sandwich you can go walk literally like a block and go to the beach to enjoy it with your family/friend/SIGNIFICANT OTHER? Definitely recommended if you are in the mood for a great meal next to Ocean Beach.

WOW!! God these sandwiches are good.. Premium meats and cheeses and fresh baked sourdough rolls...mmmmmmmm. Parking sucks sometimes... big deal.. Parking sucks all over this city. You may have to walk a whole block from your car. But its soooo worth it.

Ohhhhh how I love this place....it's about time i give a review after many many wonderful lunches here over the years....Today was especially good, I had a veggie and she put a lot of extra cheese and the avocado was perfectly ripened. The bread was also fresh from the oven, so I didn't realize they make their own rolls!!! soooo yummy. I'm kinda diggin the fact that they dont allow just a half sandwich either because I got lunch and dinner that way.....It's so nice to eat lunch on the beach too....especially a beautiful day like today!! Love this place...

I have tried, I wont say all, but a good majority of all the sandwiches that they have here and I have not found a better honest to god sandwich place. First of all, I love Fredy, who is just a wonderful person and always makes me smile. I already miss Sara like crazy and Daniel is just plain awesome. It should say something that I know their names because most of the time you wont get that close with the people that make the food at Safeway. This place is my haven from all that is bad, my calm in the storm of crazy city life. Yes this place is a little out of the way but its very worth the trip. The food here is great and I very very highly recommend all of the specials. Once you've gone through those, try the gyros, than move on to asking them to surprise you if your not a pickey eater or just pick something off the menu. I personally love surprises and once they knew the few ingredients i didn't like I would simply walk in there and be like "surprise me :)". Love this place. Great food. Great people. Wonderful place to eat.

SOOOO, SOOOOOO, SO good. Yes I love this place. Super friendly people and super yummy sandwiches. Sourdough is always fresh and the sandwich is a pretty hefty size. Great deal! Fredy's so nice... he offers a lil snack for my dog when he sees him tied up outside. Oh, I'm gonna go eat the rest of my sandwich. I always get the special. Please go, you'll love it.

why do sandwiches from this deli taste so good? Maybe its the friendly service, maybe its wonderful bread, or is it the mustard? Who cares. The sandwiches are the best deli sandwiches I have had in this town. Plus our dog Emily always comes away with a big pile of meat because the nice guys gives her the scraps of deli meat...every time! We make a special trip every once in a while to this obscure deli and have a picnic on the beach or in the park. I love this place.

This appears like your basic deli from the outside, but man, do they make a good gyro. They are not cheap, at $8.50 (including tax) but they give you a ton of meat. The pita bread is great. These are the closest ones I have found compared to the ones I had in Greece. So happy. I do wish the tzatziki was a bit tangier. Very yummy, def going here again.

This is the perfect Deli. You walk in, Freddy and Sara are generally behind the counter, they greet you with a smile. You smile back in anticipation of whats to come. They recognize you, and ask what's on tap for the day to make conversation. You say you'll be ready for anything after the special. Mendo mustard on that? they ask. Of course. Sourdough? Yes please! For here or to go? They even wrapped half of it to go, and the other half for here. Several minutes later you have one of the best sandwich's in town. A peppered turkey sandwich, with melted swiss on sourdough bread so fresh, it's still a little warm. They bake their own bread in house! You dive in are swept away to sandwich heaven. See you tomorrow Freddy.

Yet another great small business in San Francisco! Fredy is just an all-around great guy and his sandwiches are THE BEST. Fresh sourdough and everything else. If you're ever out at Ocean Beach or live nearby go to Fredy's; you won't regret it!

  • Christine D.

Thank you yelp reviwers Freddy's was awesome. Fresh out of the oven sourdough french rolls for our sandwiches. Pulled pork only on Wednesdays! We'll have to come back! They even gave us some sliced meat neatly wrapped for our puppy waiting in the car! Very nice people & great food!

Perhaps I didnt order the right sandwich. I was thoroughly disappointed with the quality. This is the only time Yelp didn't come through. For the price I paid, would've rather made the sandwich myself.

    (2)
  • Jeff M.

They serve a perfectly crunchy warm sourdough roll, housing a sandwich loaded with meat. With that combination, I didn't mind the occasional sand grain as I ate my lunch on the beach. If I was eating inside, I would have tried the potato and egg salad-- it looked delicious. A great capper to a bike ride through the park.

  • Chris - Ali C.

Yum! Always take the fresh sourdough roll when you get your sandwich. It was so tasty. My husband and I got a couple different sandwiches, we each ate half at the store and then took the other halves with us and had them for lunch the next day, they were still great! If you're out on the beach and need a lunch, you should try this place. They also have chips, beverages of all varieties, and other goodies.

been here once and got the gyro and i must say, it wasn't anything to write home about. this is a cool little place though and their menu is pretty deep. i hear good things about the breakfast sandwich, so i must go back and try it again. nice casual, relaxing environment and very friendly people here.

this is my absolute favorite place to eat in the city. I have been going here since I was around 5 years old because my mom would always take me and now my boyfriend and I are super lucky to live just across the park, so of course we keep going back. I LOVE sandwiches. love them. I have them all the time everywhere whenever I can. Fredy's has consistently made my favorite sandwiches in the whole world!! my faves: honey peppered turkey w/ pepper jack and honey mustard (hot) - this is what I have ordered every time (cept wednesdays now) the number 2 with spicy mustard (hot) - the girl who works there (agh I can't remember her name) recommended it as her favorite and we always get it along with our honey pepper turkey now pulled pork (HOLY CRAP!) - it's only served wednesdays even though we always ask him to move it to saturdays so it's more convenient for us lol. you must make the trek to try this one. play hooky from work/school - it's worth it! aside from the food being incredible, affordable and hugely portioned, every single person who works there is amazingly friendly. the vibe there is just awesome. fredy always remembers his customers and often what they always order. we'll be moving to glen park soon, but I know we will make it out to Fredy's at least a couple time a month. it's just that good!

    (5)
  • Dan S.

This place is sooooo good. The roasted turkey and roast beef are roasted in-house. They bake the sourdough rolls themselves. What I get: Either of the above 2 meats on sourdough with mendo mustard and everything. Try it and you will thank me. It can get kinda packed around lunchtime on a sunny day when the surf is pumping and the whole city heads to the outer avenues for some beachtime. Then again, how often does that happen?

  • Rachel S.

I have lived in the sunset for 2+ years and just found this place. That's unfortunate! Its the best deli on the west side of the city. Great sandwiches and really nice people. If you like hot sauce go there!! Ill definitely be back!

  • Melissa M.

We lucked out today when we tried this place. It was just what the Doctor ordered after spending the morning in the fog at Lands End. A hot saucy meatball sandwich. I don't think I have ever ordered one before but this was pretty awesome and obviously homemade. Comforting...like Mother's Milk. My 2 year old kept yelling, "More meatballs, Mommy! More meatballs!" If that is not a hearty endorsement, I don't know what is. Fredy enjoyed hearing it! The service was incredibly good and helpful -- especially with the kiddos. I'll be back -- husband LOVES meatball sandwiches. He missed out today.

  • Amy K.

The sandwiches here are delicious. I had sworn off turkey sandwiches for life until I found this deli. Was in a rush today, running late as usual, and trying to grab something to eat before heading out to play tennis. The service here was fast and super friendly, despite being really busy. What really made this sandwich great was the fresh sourdough roll it came on. The bread was so fresh it was still warm. yumm!

  • Mark W.

I've tried many sandwiches ove the years and with all the great reviews Fredy's got, I said to myself, I had better try it sooner rather than later. What I really liked was the bread. It was chewy and crunchy on the outside and moist and soft on the inside. However, I don't feel like the rest of it was that great. I had the Roast Beef so maybe that's not one of their best??? Well, I think I'd come again and try something else just to see if the hype is justified. I think Sub Center is way better. And Roxie's too but I'll wait and see if my next Fredy's experience is closer to all the rest of you Yelpers out there.....

    (3)
  • Marcess O.

Yelpers, you've led me to some awesome places and you've yet to let me down. This place was pretty freaking awesome. Friend and I went to the Legion of Honor and wanted to try something else for lunch since the museum cafe is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced. Saw the reviews for this place and immediately got a craving for a gyro. Friend loves pulled pork. It was Wednesday, so it worked. My gyro was delicious and filling. Seasoned well and had a good amount of onions, tomato, and sauce. Friend's pulled pork was fantastic. The meat was great, the sauce was delish, and the sourdough was excellent. Seriously, I'm salivating writing this review because I'm thinking about lunch. I don't know when I'll be back, but I will head over for sure!

    (5)
  • Natas N.

My fellow yelpers have pretty much summed it up. This place is THE best deli sandwich for my money in SF hands down. Doesn't hurt that it's only 20 some odd blocks from my house and right across the street from the beach. Pastrami = 5 stars. Mortadello = 5stars... Can't wait to grab a reuben. Ah crap.. Now I'm hungry.

    (5)
  • g m.

I absolutely love this place. Great service, really good sandwiches, and it's right near the beach. I always go hear and get whatever the daily special is. It is THE BEST!!!! They fresh bake their bread so a lot of the time it's still warm out of the oven. The ingredients are always on point. 5 STARS for you Fredy!!!

    (5)
  • Drue C.

Okay, lets face it, San Francisco is not known for their great deli's. I have been to many sandwich shops hoping and praying that this one wouldn't let me down and break my heart like the last one. Then I take a bite of the sandwich and realize its just like all the others. Cold, bland and empty inside. Freddys is an exception. Now, if you threw it into the middle of , say, New York, it probably wouldn't get 4 stars. You have to take all things in context, and for a San Francisco deli, this one is pretty damn good. The people are friendly, they have a good selection of chips and sodas and salads and sweets. They dont skimp on the ingredients and things are fresh. If you are craving a decent sandwich its worth checking this place out. It wont disappoint you.

Wooo! I've been to SF twice in the past 6 months, eaten here both times. GREAT sandwiches, GREAT potato/egg salad, and GREAT personality. very friendly. get off your butt and go grab a sammich from Fredy!

Love this place. Freddy is always there and recognizes me everytime. Turkey/cheese soft roll no tomato! oh and macaroni salad is AWESOME! Best deli in the area~by far!

I love this place, Fredy and who I assume is his daughter make such great fucking sandwiches. And when you live all the way out here by the beach, it's important to have options other than Safeway.

Dude. Pulled pork. No seriously, DUDE. PULLED PORK. Wednesday. Just do it.

  • Owen S.

Don't even think of going to Burger King next door. I work all around ocean beach and try to treat myself to a fredy's sandwich about once a week - I would do more but we are in a recession and they are a bit $$, like all places in SF. Friendly folks, ask them what they think you should have- they will never steer you wrong. Lamb gyro, or sandwiches stacked with fresh ingredients and generous cuts of meat. A sandwich will run you about $8, but its worth the money compared to BK or a Safeway sandwich around the corner.

    (5)
  • Patrick C.

I was actually disappointed with some things. We got two sandwiches: one was turkey on dutch crunch, and the other was pastrami. I've never been to a sandwich shop that charged extra for cheese on top of an already over-priced sandwich. The sandwiches themselves were just ok. The wasn't very much of anything between the bread, so i'm not sure what all that money is paying for. I probably won't go back.

    (2)
  • Troy K.

Definitely one of my new favorite sandwich spots. I am always on the lookout for a good sandwich, and Fredy's just made the list of places I frequently visit. The sourdough is awesome, pulled pork is very good and I will be back on a Friday to try the meatball sub. Very low key spot with very fast friendly service. Today my sandwich was made before I could pick out a drink and chips. Not the cheapest, but when you have something good going, why shortchange yourself? Thanks Fredy!

  • niselynne X.

I love Fredy's sandwiches I dream of them. I wake up in the morning and can think of nothing but a pastrami with swiss on a fresh sourdough roll with everything AND pepperoncino...ONLY from Fredy's. ...and oooh, if you are up early enough do yourself a favor and get the breakfast sandwich. Just do it, don't ask, do.

A block away from ocean beach, bar none, THE BEST sandwich shop in the city. PERIOD. Fresh bread made daily. Fat sandwiches with all the right stuff. Freddy is there ALL THE TIME and he's good people. The ocean, good people, and THE BEST SANDWICHES in the city. Need I say more?

i love that burger king is just two doors down. yknow. so i can snicker at those patrons for eating grade f meat. got the corned beef on sourdough. stephen got the black forest ham on sourdough. SO pleased that the woman making my sandwich didn't skimp when i made a request for extra mayo. ...i'm also happy to report that, when i peeled back the wrapper, i was greeted w/multiple slices of corned beef. she also labeled our sandwiches, 'his' and 'hers', respectively. - - cute, ey? perfect addition to our day at the beach.

Great sandwiches! I really like their sourdough. It's not too tough, but has the right amount of bite and tang to it. #3 is great! Jack cheese, pastrami and turkey with all the fixins! Can't go wrong! Friendly service too! The owner? saw us with the 3 dogs and gave us some meat to give to them! Will come back to try the pulled pork special!

This little hole in the wall is one of the top places in town. The bread is fresh, the meat is good, and the ingredients are quality. The guy behind the counter was hella cool. Being from Memphis, i talked about how hard it was to find good BBQ and he invited me back on Wed for pulled pork. Man, you guys have got to check this place out. I know it's pretty far but on the way to the beach or on the way home, you can't get much better than this.

Perhaps this is the PLACE to have the BEST sandwiches in TOWN! It rocks here, I was so surprised to see that many people have not went here, or yelped about this place, it Will rock your world, it is the best place to get a sandwich and they are always so good and so fresh and so original, it will rock your world, you must go to this deli, take your sandwich to the beach and then you will make it a routine:) so good so damn good...

wow, this place makes a great sandwich! i'd never heard of it before today, when i saw that it was a featured deal on scoutmob. i had to check it out, so went with a friend who is also a lover of sandwiches and we both loved our sandwiches immensely. i had the tuesday special, hot roasted chicken and bacon with melted swiss cheese and i had to have it on the homemade sourdough bread, still warm and crunchy from the oven, yummy. they made both of our sandwiches just right, and i'll definitely be back. it's def worth a trip to the outer richmond to find this hidden gem. thanks!

  • Sole S.

First and foremost, thank you to all you Yelpers! Our entire salon team came out to clean up Ocean Beach one Sunday morning to do our part for Earth month '08 . I knew beforehand that after two hours of beach cleanup, I needed to find a great place to feed our team of 11 rather quickly. Everyone was spot-on about the sandwiches. Not only were all the sandwiches fantastic, with just two behind the counter we couldn't believe that each of us had our sandwiches made at the speed of light! It was so nice to end our afternoon and be able to eat together as a group. Thank you again......we'll be back. BTW....I'm a bread lover and their sour dough bread was the best I've ever had!

  • Roderic C.

Man. I had their corned beef combo (read: giant sized). It was fantastic. The owner (I'm not sure his name is Fredy) was so nice. He was really friendly, asked how things were chatted for awhile and made the whole meal a great atmosphere. My friend and I decided to stick around and have mochas (on the house). It was so great. I'd DEF go back there.

    (5)
  • Frances P.

I'm a sandwich fanatic. Fredy's makes the best sandwiches I've ever had. Meat sliced terrifically thin, fantastic cheese, and oh my--the bread. Fresh baked sourdough rolls still warm from the oven. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and chewy inside, and oh so tasty. I agree with an earlier poster, the bread may be the most important component of a sandwich, and sadly is the one most often overlooked. Not at Fredy's though.

Heard about the amazing reviews, so decided to check this place out. My husband ordered a gyro and I ordered a sandwich. The gyro was microwaved and the meat tasted like it was boiled. The sandwich had some wilted onion, a stack of warm meat and no cheese. Next day, we both had stomach aches. Nice guy, nice place, but lacking in freshness and quality.

After being at the beach all afternoon, I really needed a bite to eat. I found myself here on a late Saturday afternoon. Since I was going to a BBQ in a few hours, I thought this would be a perfect place to pick up a sandwich beforehand. The people behind the counter were very cheerful and had a friendly banter with customers. I ordered a hot pastrami and it came up fast and fresh. Perfect stop for around the beach.

Freddy's Deli is definitely a great place to get sandwiches! Love the bread that they use for their sandwiches---they have so many options available and daily specials too.....but of course, if you can't seem to make up your mind, then you can always ask Freddy or his friendly staffs for suggestions. If you're just looking for sweets----well, they have some pretty good carrot cake.....or if you like, their tiramisu is not too bad either!

Excellent. A friend of mine used to live at 46th and Fulton. We'd walk over to Freddy's with quite a bit of frequency. I usually like meat on my sandwiches, but Freddy's is one of the few places where I yield to the "veggie" sandwich. You cannot go wrong with jack cheese and avocado on their sourdough roll. I usually ask for 1/2 cheese as I swear they put a pound on there. Add in all the regular sandwich toppin's and you've got an excellent sandwich.

I gotta take Freddy's down a notch. Service was great, but location is a bit out of the way, and from other reviews, i was expecting a sandwich that would make a trip from the opposite side of town worth it. Not so much. My pepper turlkey sandwich was good, but a tad dry, this is with everything on it mind you, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomats, onion, AND cheese. Maybe its the east coast in me that is being all bratty, but I have had sandwiches better than this on the peninsula. Location is a little out of the way, almost at the end of laplaya st. next time I'm going to the beach, I'll stop by for a sandwich, chips and a drink, but not worth a trip from father away than USF if ya ask me.

[Homer Simpson drool.....] Sandwiches. Oh boy do we take them for granted! Lots of places like to call themselves a "deli" and throw crappy meat on crappy bread with crappy mustard, slather it in mayonnaise, and charge you $8. And the worst part is, we PUT UP with these places! We think some of them actually taste GOOD... UNTIL you go back to Fredy's and realize you haven't been eating sandwiches at all... Fredy knows what he's doing. He has obviously spent a significant amount of time on the east coast making real sandwiches, and I love him for choosing to put up his fine establishment right here in San Francisco. There is something about Fredy's sandwiches that changes your life. I've watched him make my sandwich dozens of times and just like watching a magic show, you're left with the end product asking yourself, "How the heck did they do that?" My theory is that Fredy gets his ingredients from HEAVEN. I'm not even going to make any recommendations on what sandwich to order because I bet whatever is on (or even off!) the menu is sure to be delectable. This guy could make a bologna mortadella and anchovi sandwich and it would STILL taste good. I can't believe people even bother going to the gross Safeway down the street for a deli sandwich, I have literally walked by that line and told them to go over to Fredy's. All in all, PROPS to what is in my opinion the Best Sandwich in SF. In fact, I think Fredy's sandwiches are the SECOND BEST SANDWICHES IN THE WORLD (coming in only after Ahwanee Hotel's monte cristo, which I'm pretty sure God invented himself). The sides and baked goods are also excellent - try the baklava!

I LOVED my sandwich from here. It was on the best sour dough bread roll I've ever had. I ordered the turkey and salami combo #6. So good! Bf ordered the corned beef and pastrami #2. He orders it every time. He said its been better in the past but after being closed for 6 months, Fredy was sick, bf says its still perty darn good.

We love this wonderful neighborhood deli--great ambiance and service. My wife and I split dutch crunch and sourdough veggie sandwiches. They were both really good but we decided that the sourdough was just a bit better.

Service was good! And food was good! This is a hole in the wall deli shop :)! The owner Freddy was very nice and friendly. I got the special- peppered turkey breast with swizz! I got it on sourdough, which was extremely fresh and crispy; I loved it! Boyfriend got an egg salad sandwich, which he seemed to like. The sandwiches were on the larger side of the scale. Our total together was $13 bucks, since he offers $1 off with each sandwich. Cheap and good!

I was so delighted to happen upon this deli near Ocean Beach! Not only do they have delicious sandwiches, and friendly staff, but they also were kind enough up (gratis, no less) a sampling for the four legged love in my life while I was perusing their menu!!! I will definitely patronize this establishment again!

I spent a day at the beach and was starving when I left the sand and the waves. One block away from Ocean Beach on La Playa is Fredy's Ocean Beach Deli. This deli is almost a hole-in-the-wall. It's nothing fancy. Just a couple tables and a guy making sandwiches. There are coolers with bottled beverages and racks of chips. There is a large white board with the menu. The menu consists of almost any kind of sandwich you can think of. There are also combination sandwiches that include multiple meats and cheese. Another specialty are real gyros made fresh here. The sandwiches range from $5-8 each. I ordered a #3 combination. It took the owner only 1 minute to make it. Another minute to pay and I was out the door. The sandwich felt like it weighed 5 lbs. It was huge. It was pastrami, turkey and pepper jack on a fresh, crusty sourdough roll. It was topped with an Italian type dressing, lettuce, onions and pickles. The bread was amazing: crusty on the outside and soft on the inside with a really delightful sourdough tang. The sandwich was big and really filling. It was definitely worth the price. If you are in the Outer Richmond or at Ocean Beach and you're hungry, you must stop here. You won't be disappointed.

The price was just right, the food was prompt and tasted delicious, and the service was personable and professional. If we lived nearby we would regularly be here! Get your sandwich with melted cheese. You won't regret it.

My mom and I came here a few weekends ago. My sister was running the Nike Women's Marathon and we were starving while waiting at the finish line. We asked someone where to get food and everybody said there was no food for about 5 miles. I thought that was nonsense so I pulled out my phone and Yelp allowed me to discover this wonderful place. The owner was just opening the doors as we walked in and was so kind to help us right away (it was about 10 minutes before they technically opened). The owner was the sweetest guy ever and was very friendly. We got the peppered turkey and swiss which was absolutely delicious. I also got a small latte which hit the spot too. Customer service: A+ Convenience: A+ Overall food: A

Fredy's Sandwiches are delicious! I usually get Turkey and Cheese on Sourdough but love trying Fredy's daily specials too. You can't really go wrong with anything on the board. Hopefully with the new ownership, the quality and service stays the same. I have yet to try something since then but just have another reason to stop by Fredy's Ocean Beach Deli!

Sandwiches, smokes, soda, beer, and wine. Yes, please!!! My husband and I have been here several times on our way to Land's End when it was Fredy's and we liked it. Today was our first time there as Kawika's and we LOVE it!!!! I ordered a lamb gyro and it was delicious!!! My husband got the special which I believe was chicken, bacon and pepper-jack. Interesting combination and he loved it. Everyone working there was so friendly! It was a BEAUTIFUL day today! We walked in with tattoos exposed and were welcomed with the same excellent customer service as everyone who was already there/ came in. No one treated us or looked at us like we were out of place. EXCELLENT customer service. Super clean. I noticed the health inspection score on the wall. 96. That's pretty close to perfect and I wasn't surprised when I saw it. Sometimes a place might look clean on the outside...but behind the scenes it's a different story. This is place is clean which is pretty important. My husband and I have one day a week off together. For the past few years we've been going to the same place for lunch on that day. This past year we've gotten bored with the menu but there isn't much to choose from around this part of town! Today as we were enjoying our gyro/ sandwich at Land's End (we got them to go) we decided this will be our new day off together lunch place. My husband always loves a daily special and I could be happy with the lamb gyro forever it's that good :-)

Yumz. We called in the order since they close at 6. You can get any of the sandwiches heated/warmed. Nice big portions and as I'm eating the leftovers now it's still pretty delicious!

I've been coming to Fredy's since I was a kid. Amazing sandwiches, the absolute best regular deli you could want. An awesome place to have in your neighborhood, and Fredy's a very cool regular guy as well. Like I said, I've been coming here since I was a youngster. I know Fredy, and others in this community. I know why he's closed right now. It's not my business to put his personal life on the internet though. Suffice it to say if you folks with your 1 star reviews because you walked down to Ocean Beach to find a closed deli knew why, you'd feel terrible for giving this guy 1 star. You didn't eat here. You don't know the awesomeness that is Fredy's. You have no business leaving a review. Pack up your hate and go away. Fredy, I hope you're coming back soon. We miss you! With love, -S
